Yeah. that was the Arena. But why aren't you writing, sir? Someone would need to run it. Also competition writing gets me writing, but it's normally whatever I can regurgitate in a week. I want to spend more time writing each story. I can see your thinking, and in fact I'm often thinking the same. But in the end I still think it's better to write for the competition. Sure, it knocks you out of any "free writing" for a little bit, but it does actually make you write. And for short stories, I almost think it's better to get something out as fast as possible and then edit. Rather than spending a whole lot of time carefully writing. That's more for novelettes and longer.

I don't have the time to write, but I could judge, if need be.

If we get one more, then we've got 8 writers which is a perfect number. Although more than 8 we'll still be able to make work.
Then we can figure out the best way to format a competition and get everything ready for the start.

One more writer? Anybody?

Matteo should get in on this, where is he?

So, if we get to 8, what about this for the Format:
- Arena Competition - one organiser - everyone writes anonymously - matches are decided by popular vote. Anonymously, people (whether they're writing in the competition or not) review the matches and choose their favourites.
- Have a first round of two matches of four writers, with the winner of each progressing.
- Have a "redemption" second round where the six remaining writers are broken into two matches of three writers, with the winner of each progressing.
- Two semi-finals and then a final.
- It means that everyone gets at least two matches, but it also means we don't drag this out for too long. The most anyone is writing for is four matches.
For example:
James Zovo Inkdrinker Kaez Injin Dragon Sawyer Tupac
Round One:
James v Zovo v Inkdrinker v Kaez - Kaez wins; Injin v Dragon v Sawyer v Tupac - Tupac wins.
Round Two: James v Dragon v Inkdrinker - Inkdrinker wins; Injin v Zovo v Sawyer - Sawyer wins.
Semi-Final: Kaez v Sawyer - Kaez wins; Tupac v Inkdrinker - Tupac wins.
Final: Tupac v Kaez - Tupac wins.
Thoughts?

Looks good. Can't wait to see what Tupac writes.

Looks good. Can't wait to see what Tupac writes. I think this makes me the Notorious B.I.G. EDIT: Yeah, James, I really love that format, actually. Relatively short, very forgiving (more emphasis on round winners than round losers & everyone writes twice), allows writing against a diverse group of writers (guaranteed at least 5 of the other 8), etc. Really great format. I dig it. Let's get a #8.

Also, someone to organise. Sensar offered to judge, so it might be better if he's -not- the organiser. Because the organiser is going to know who's written what because they post everything. And if Sensar isn't the organiser, and he's got the time, hopefully each match is guaranteed at least one reviewer. Maybe Matteo if he's too busy to write or review?
I'd then hope that all the writers would review and vote for the match they're not writing in. Along with anyone else not involved at all, so if Mena or Jor or anyone wants to review and vote, they're free to.

It's not like we need him to judge if we all judge each other.

Alright, so while we're waiting for number eight, I'm not going to let this die. So I've changed the last Arena's schedule for this this year. Let me know what you think. Any concerns and so on? I've gone for a January 10 starting point, does that suit everyone? Going earlier might be pushing it, but maybe not?
Also, I tried to make sure there's always a weekend for writing to happen but I've realised just now that I might have fucked that up for Zovo...
Note on times: All times are in US-EST, and the common deadline will be 3am EST. That's 2am CST, 1am MST, 12am PST, 9pm New Zealand, and 8am GMT. It's also 10pm on -the day prior- for Hawaii.
January 10 - January 17 Eight writers will write the entries for the first round. There will be two matches of four writers each. Introductions will be sent out on January 10 at 3am EST, and the deadline will close at 3am EST on January 17. All entries must be received by that time. So that means you get a Sunday to start the round and a Saturday to finish it. PM entries to the organiser, do -not- post them.
Notes on introductions: Introductions will be story passages of 75 to 150 words, which cannot be altered and must be used as the beginning of an entry. These will be PM'd to the writers, and then posted in a thread. There is no limit to the length of pieces, although 5,000 is regarded as a "soft limit".
January 17 - January 20 Reviews will be open from January 17 at 3am EST to January 20 at 3am EST. To vote for stories, you will send one PM to the organiser, containing all reviews and votes you are making for this round, any time you have finished reviewing (you don't have to review them all, if you don't want to) and before January 20 at 3am EST.
Note on reviews and votes: You must review a story to vote for it. You cannot vote for your own match. Votes are to be made in a 'thumbs up' manner. In other words: one person wins the match, the others lose -- that simple. Making references to Gladiator during these votes is encouraged.
January 20 At 3am on January 20, voting will close. During that day the entries and reviews will all be posted by the organiser in their corresponding threads. In the event of a tie, a psychic snail will make the conclusive vote. If one is unavailable, a judgement call will be made by the organiser as the tiebreaker.
January 20 - January 27 The winners of the first two matches get a rest week. Round two begins when introductions are PM'd to the remaining six writers at 3am EST on January 20. Writing will take place through to January 27 at 3am EST. PM entries to the organisers, do -not- post them.
January 27 - January 30 Reviews will be open from January 27 at 3am EST to January 30 at 3am EST. Gather all reviews and votes for entries from this round and PM them to the organiser.
January 30 At 3am EST on January 28, voting will close. Entries and reviews will be posted that day. January 30 - February 6 The semi-finals begins when introductions are PM'd to the remaining four writers at 3am EST on January 30. Writing will take place through to February 6 at 3am EST. PM entries to the organisers, do -not- post them.
February 6 - February 9 Reviews will be open from February 6 at 3am EST to February 9 at 3am EST. Gather all reviews and votes for entries from this round and PM them to the organiser.
February 9
At 3am EST on February 9, voting will close. Entries and reviews will be posted that day.
February 9 - February 16
Round four The championship THUNDERDOME!!! begins on February 9 at 3am EST. Introductions will be PM'd to the remaining two writers. Writing will take place through to February 16 at 3am EST. PM entries to the organiser, do -not- post them.
February 16 - February 19 Reviewing for the championship begins on February 16 at 3am EST and ends on February 19 at 3am EST. Gather all reviews and votes for entries from this round and PM them to the organiser.
February 19 After February 19 at 3am EST, the organiser will gather the reviews and post them in the thread, along with the announcement of the winner of the tournament by name. From then on, you may (entirely optionally) go back to any entries you made and label them as your own.
