Sign-ups are closed, discussion is open! The first six topics are available here: awritersrecluse.proboards.com/board/7/awr-cupYou will have the up to, and including, the entirety of January 7th to submit. And I'll try to get the prompts for Round 2 up exactly at midnight, 12:00am on the 8th. Midnight on the 7th/12:00AM EST on the 8th is also, for reference, 5AM on the 8th for Reffy, 2PM on the 8th for Dragon, and 6PM on the 7th for Zovo. So Reffy, prompts for Round 2 should be up for you by the time you wake up on the 8th. Dragon, they'll be up mid-day. Zovo, they'll be up the evening of the 7th.

Hmmm... A pet peeve of mine is the use of "epic" to describe things which are not especially large or great. Now I must condense "epic" into a short story...
I've got an idea of which of the several worlds I was considering to use, but not much on how to make epic small.

MACGUFFIN: THE TOPIC
I kid, this actually rolls pretty well with my ideas thus far. Although I like Alpha's other topics as well, I think I could have done all three depending on how far you're willing to stretch "catacombs".

Might go with a scifi setting for this - been a while since I wrote anything like that, could be fun.

Quick question, Kaez.
You describe the "Epic Journey" and then give a topic. Are you expecting a single entry describing an entire epic journey somehow incorporating the topic? Or is "Epic Journey" sort of like the theme for Alpha group and all the upcoming topics will follow said theme?
I don't want to write one scene of an epic journey when you're expecting the whole quest.

I don't want to write one scene of an epic journey when you're expecting the whole quest. Lol. Zovo. You are making me seriously regret the word "epic". I meant it in the sense of a journey which covers a very long distance, like from the source to the mouth of the river, or one which has broad implications, or one which is actually, you know, a mythological epic. I feel like it's a pretty broad term. My only goal with it was the prevent you from making it a small-scale, personal, subjective kind of thing. I want this to -mean- something in your world, not just be a minor character drama that -happens- to be in your setting. But no, "epic journey" is not going to continue into next round. That's this round only. Your "topic" for this round consists of one each of the two traditional "topic" styles, 1) A writing-style/genre restriction, i.e. that it has to be first-person and detail an important journey, and 2) A specific theme or element that the story must include, i.e. river travel. Apologies for the confusion here. Didn't think I was as unclear as I was.

Cool, thanks.
I'm sure it was probably clear to everyone else... It's just my personal issues with the word epic that threw me off, I'm sure.

Oh man. Urban fantasy meets Three Men in a Boat travelogue is a go. My only goal with it was the prevent you from making it a small-scale, personal, subjective kind of thing. I want this to -mean- something in your world, not just be a minor character drama that -happens- to be in your setting. Seriously, though, I think I already have a story in mind. Which is surprising. Usually I take a day of loathing of the topic to think of something.

It's the first person narrative style that I think is going to give me the biggest issue. I didn't see that part when I read it last night and fell in love with my idea, and now that I see it there I have to adapt.

I should probably think of a world to start writing in, huh? I guess I could use my AWR Cup finale one, but... Hrmm.

Well, damn Pete. Your topic is excellent for me to jump in the deep end and show off the cool idea I had for the "faerie realm".

I've been considering rewriting the Gospel as a space opera. So that's probably what I'm going to do. Restriction: First-person account of an epic journey. Topic: DESERT SANDS Ha. Haha. Hahaha.

Psssh, it's a space opera. "Oh hey, we gotta make a fuel stop on this sandy planet." I mean, obviously not that obtuse, but I can swing it. The hardest part will be avoiding Tatooine.

So how unique does something have to be to qualify as a relic?
One of the ideas I have for my setting is a certain resource that was once plentiful, but ever since a certain calamity has been extremely rare and closely hoarded by those still holding power. So for the most part is either has to be stolen, traded for exorbitant prices, or scavenged out of derelicts.
