Instead of Alpha, I'd like to request we be called the Fighting Mongooses. That's a cool team name. and the two haven't-written-in-forevers (Kwan and Blood). Oakland and Minnesota, that's us, Blood! ... Wait. God. I've been analogized to both the Raiders and the Vikings in the same sentence. If I go any farther down, I'm gonna get owned by Gene Simmons.

I've been kicking about the idea of revisiting A World Removed... No promises, though.

I've been kicking about the idea of revisiting A World Removed... No promises, though. As much as I liked A World Removed, I think I'd probably prefer seeing you writing something new. But I'm your competitor, not a judge, so you can ignore me. I'm still a little concerned at using my Urban Fantasy world, just because being an Earth-with-Magic no matter how colourful is going to struggle a little in this competition against completely original worlds, I think. But I'm just really grateful for the opportunity to take the world out for a little spin before writing a novel in it (and also trying different styles and tones).

Yeah, I need to decide which world I'm going to go with. Originally I was going to expand and codify my setting from the Cup final, but then I read that comic I mentioned a few weeks back, Ody-C, and I really wanted to rip it off. The setting would be mythological Mediterranean (mostly Greece) migrated into space opera.
I've got a bunch of cool ideas for it, but now I'm worried it wouldn't really be in the spirit of the contest, since it's more of an adapted world than a wholly original creation.

For what it's worth, it won't impact the judging. I'm judging on the quality, consistency, and depth of the worlds I read about. It feels unfair to judge it on originality (aside from cliches that detract from the stories) since, for example, I don't know anything about Ody-C and wouldn't have known you were ripping it off -- but I'd be able to call out a Tolkien trope in a second. Whether you make your world original or essentially an adaptation is a question of which world you'd most like to write 5-8 stories in. Won't be reflected at all in the judging.

I've been considering rewriting the Gospel as a space opera. So that's probably what I'm going to do. Taed, put other peoples' work into space with me!

I've been on a bit of an X-COM kick lately. So I think I'm going to give a SF-"historical" fantasy blend a whirl.
I was pretty fond of the alt-history setting I concocted for my lone 2013 Cup entry, but I don't think that could sustain a whole world building contest.

I have plenty of ideas, but I'm wondering if I should stick to plain English place names, characters etc. I tend to base my world building around non European settings and influences, but that might just be too much for Kaez to read in a competition.

I had a variety of ideas, ranging from a book idea me and Lilam tried about a zombie apocalypse in 16th century Japan to dark paranormal detective/spy novel idea based in 1930s Europe. So yeah... not too worried about ideas and more worried about poor grammar and writing myself into a corner due to months of inactive writing.

I think if you were to pick a judge for a non-European setting/influence, Pete would be high up your list.

If it becomes a chore to remember all of your foreign-sounding apostrophe-laden names, obviously that's an issue. Anyway, Round 1 topics should be up within ~15 hours.
