By the by, what genres are you all writing in this year? The novel is going to be contemporary lit fic. Short stories in between the novel writing is going to be fantasy. The first one set in the trenches of WWI. I doubt I'll do more than two, if I get onto the third, then I think I'll have to tackle one of my sci-fi ideas. ... I've been stockpiling ideas since exam study started.

Have been considering turning the failed RP: The Clam in to a novel for a long time now. It has so much steampunky possibilities! Not my usual genre but something that is appealing to me right now.

www.glyphweb.com/arda/I'm basically making my own version of -that- (though I dislike their formatting -- mine's fluffier on the eyeparts). I'm working on a worldbuilding Wiki. Though I'm sure some conventional 'stories' will be included, it's not really narrative-based so much as it is historical and anthropological. But it is certainly Fantasy.

I thought I did 3 NaNo's? My account says 2. There was Bel'Gonows, Alonzo and ... brain-fart! Anybody?
{Edit: just checked the NaNo forum bitty and I have only 2 sharing threads. Guess I only did 2. Hmpf.}
WAIT! I did do another. It was the fairy thing ... but it wasn't an official NaNo, right? Because it was our own AWR-rush thingy. HA! Ahahahaha! Knew I wasn't going nuts.

I think AWR has won at NaNo every year someone has done it (insofar as one person from here has won it each year). So, no pressure.

Well, I'm just not sure whether I can do it sanely (is sanely a word?). And this being my first year with y'all, not to mention NaNo, I really wanna make it! Random question: how do y'all feel about world-building? Personally, aside from my master plot bouncing about in my head, I think I'm literally going to start from scratch - I'm just going to jump in and see where my story takes me. I would like to think that this will help foster a feeling of immersion, rather than having convinced myself of complete omniscience of my world. This way, I hope, little tidbits of information will be able to just pop in, foregoing the need for explanatory, expository (and, in my case, sometimes apologetic) paragraphs. It might just be more conducive to show style writing for me. But what are your thoughts?

Jumping in randomly is the most fun you can have with NaNo. The world will come to life and show you where the story wants to go. We love world building!

This way, I hope, little tidbits of information will be able to just pop in, foregoing the need for explanatory, expository (and, in my case, sometimes apologetic) paragraphs. It might just be more conducive to show style writing for me. But what are your thoughts? Depends what you care about. If the thing that ultimately matters to you is your story, don't put too much emphasis on the worldbuilding. Just keep your story's world consistent. Especially with the use of fantasy: you want your reader to feel like that know what to expect out of it. Not that it's predictable or formulated or strictly adheres to a set of rules, but just that nothing is going to stand out as not belonging. Think of Tolkien's magic. There are no rules or explanations given of Gandalf's magic in The Hobbit/LotR, but it's not like you're confused as to the limit or extent of his power. It's made clear, even if not explicit. That kind of consistency for the reader is what really creates immersion. That the story and the world adhere to the truth of their own rules, and stick to their own standards. That said: worldbuilding is my favorite thing to do in the world and my entire 50k words of NaNo will be that. So. Jumping in randomly is the most fun you can have with NaNo. The world will come to life and show you where the story wants to go. We love world building! ... I like plans. It's a balance for me. I like to have a definite framework of where I'm going, but I also don't like to be too in control. I lay out the skeleton, but let the meat just sort of grow itself. If you put a few places and people and events into motion, it's pretty easy to watch the story just.. unfold itself from there. And sometimes it'll do things that you really didn't expect it to. But that's good. Like all things, it's a balance.

Plans are also good. I had a lot of fun pre-planning Bel'Gonows and put a huge amount of thought and creation into it. I really should revisit it.

The first NaNoWriMo writing session begins.
Because I'm just doing 50,000 words of various fiction, the ghost story counts toward my word count.
Ha.

881 words in my first writing session. About an hour. And I had several distractions.
I'm quite pleased with the ease I seem to be writing these days. I don't tend to get stuck on sentences or scenes as much as I once did.

Opening Day. Broke the 2,000 word mark. Nice! I will probably be starting at lunch and finishing after work. Really going to have to juggle my life a little and rely on that buffer.
