It's been a while since we've had a competition, two months, I think. Which is just far too long for a place that use to have a competition that was bustling with activity every month. Furthermore, I think the last competition with major forum wide participation was back with the Arena in January.
So let's change that.
The Challenge is back. This shall be the fourth iteration of it. The most successful one was in December, where we regularly saw 7-9 entries in each round and I ended up reading nearly 40 stories in just over three weeks.
I'd like to see us beat that. Let's get over 40 stories from the July Challenge. And at least one round where over 10 people enter. For that sake, the topics will be trying to find that utopian promised land between challenging, welcoming and conductive to improvement in writing.
So no pressure on me or you guys.
Most people should know how the Challenge works now, but just in case you don't:
I’m going to post a topic/genre/prompt. You’ll have till 11:59pm of the 9th July to write something, so basically five whole days. We’ll be using the same rules of the Monthly Assignment except the word limit is now only 1,500 (and I expect most will be more near 1,000). I’ll be a sole judge and score according to a slightly tweaked judging template (/25) and your scores will go onto the leader board.
At midnight of the 9th/10th July a new topic will go up. You have till 11:59pm of the 14th July. These will be judged and your scores shall be added onto the leader board. This will continue as so:
NOW – 11:59pm 9th July 12:00am 10th July – 11:59pm 14th July 12:00am 15th July – 11:59pm 19th July 12:00am 20th July – 11:59pm 24th July 12:00am 25th July – 11:59pm 29th July NOTE: All times are EST (it's a compromised time). Also, I've aimed for each round to have at least one day fall on the weekend.
So that’s five rounds. The reason this format works quite nicely is two-fold. Firstly, if no one writes anything or only one person does. It’s no problem. We just keep the competition going as planned. It also gives a reward for writing quantity as well as quality because if you compete in every round then you start to gain an advantage over other people.
They’ll be two winners. The person who leads the leader board and the person who wins the most individual rounds (therefore sheer quality can win out if you don’t have enough time to compete in all the rounds). If there's two seperate winners at the end of the mouth, then we can Thunderdome it. Because Thunderdome is a verb.

I might as well throw my hat into the ring. Then grab it. Then put it back on. And finally enter this contest.

246 words. So sue me. I wrote. I've not written in a long time. It's a bit personal. But I wrote.

Working on something for this, but I get the feeling it's going to be much too long. Think it'd work if I only put in the first bit, would still be on the long side. Would that be Okay, entering only part of a story? It would have some amount of stand-alone-ness and stuff, of course.

As long as it is capable of standing alone as its own story, then yes. That means providing at least some sort of satisfactory ending.

Satisfactory is in the eye of the beholder, but I'll see what I can do. EDIT: No idea what I just posted. It's something like 60 words over which I think is fine. I am perplexed as to how I wrote something like it. Half of me wants to hate it and the other is just glad I wrote something at all.

The first four entries have now been marked.
We're also halfway to hitting the goal of having ten entries in a single round. So, keep writing, people!

And I've posted my weird attempt at doing something in relation to the topic.
Honestly, the guy who posted before me sort of stole my initial idea, but hey whatever.
