In a fit of pique, I've managed to distract myself from NaNoWriMo by writing a short story about a character struggling with writing during a monthly novel writing month.

It's already 2800 words and I'm not sure why it's so much fun to write when I should be writing my novel.

And again, I think the quality is all there. Hopefully I can get another 1,000 words in later today to take me well over 6,000 words and start bringing down that deficit.

I think I've stumbled onto some kind of child labour ring. In researching Boston for my book I've come across a massive school in Chinatown that seems too good to be true: tennis courts on the roof, indoor swimming pool, the works. However, although the building is clearly a school just from looking at it, on Google Maps it's labeled as a medical center. Furthermore, it is completely absent from the online A-Z directory of Boston schools, and the school's own website is incredibly slapdash.

And finally, most damning of all, the school is rated a 6 out of 10 on greatschools.org, which is exactly the rating I, as a parent, would give a school that was paying me to look the other way while they used my children to sew cheap wallets. Because, you know, it's not great, obviously, but the kids are learning a trade and I can afford a new Ferrari so .... yeah, a 6 seems fair.

Also, I found my way back into the story ... and even though I was worried about the quality I think it's the best bloody scene of the book so far! Not because of what happened but because the writing is top quality! ;D Oh, and the scene totally introduced a new character and the evil bitch witch
