Hello and Welcome to AWR's newest on-going challenge style competition;
A Picture is Worth 1,000 Words
Here's how you play.
I will post an image in the story thread. Your job is to write an original composition inspired by that image exactly 1,000 words in length. At the end of the writing period (I'm thinking 7 days ought be enough) I will close the thread and post my judgments, scores , and reviews.
The difference between this competition and any other (aside from the fact that the scores are largely arbitrary based on my whims) is that it's about control. The only prompt you will get is the image. Genre, structure, tense, point of view; these are all up to you. Wanna write a third person future tense sci-fi detective story? Go for it. Feeling like composing an epic poem about an owl who knits sweaters for squirrels? Have at it. This competition isn't about that, it's about Precision storytelling. Keeping it interesting, telling a story, and landing right on the 1,000 word mark. Submissions will be graded on the following criteria:
Sentence Structure: 0/25
Word Choice: 0/25
Use of Image: 0/25
Grammar/Spelling: 0/10
Word Penalty: (special)
Likes: (special)
The categories are described as thus:
Sentence Structure: Basically phrasing and over all sentence quality. Are your sentences overly long? Overly brief? A mixture of the two? Are they artfully crafted to say exactly what you want them to say without needless exposition or neglect of the relevant? How do they affect pacing and rhythm? Etc. Essentially, how does the construction of the sentences themselves lend value to the piece?
Word Choice: This one pretty much speaks for itself. Can you chose the right words to convey the right meaning -and- hit your word length target? I'm not looking for flowery or obscure words or just really cool words (like syzygy). I'm looking for the right words, the best words, for any given situation.
Use of Image: Can I see the image in the piece you've written? Can I see where the inspiration came from? How creative were you with the image provided?
Grammar/Spelling: Self-explanatory.
Word Penalty: As I said, this competition is about precision. You have a target to hit. This category will gauge how far off the mark you are. Each word off the mark (above or below) will detract 1 point from your score. I understand that not all software counts words the same so all submissions will be run through my own word counter (Titles will not be included, nor will chapter headings or anything of the like) and that will be the official value.
Likes: This is another special category so everyone can make their voice heard. If you haven't noticed, our new forum format gives each user the ability to "Like" a post one time. Each "Like" a submission receives from other forum members at the time of judging will be worth 5 points. You may only "Like" any given submission once, but you may "Like" as many as you please.
Total Scores will be tallied up in this post and I will try to run a new competition each week. If that's not long enough to write, or if I can't keep up with the reviews/judging, I may extend that, But for now, seven days.
Round One will begin as soon as I post an image. The first deadline will be September 27th, 9:00PM (HST). I trust you can all do the math.
Please limit discussion and questions to this thread.
