The 10,000 Club
So, last year we did a little thing called the 10,000 Club. It was all about trying to keep people writing throughout the year. Now, after May it all fell apart, which was a shame. However, up to the point of May, the 10,000 Club had collectively written: 324,344 words. So in under half a year, we had nearly written a third of a million words. So I'm not prepared to call 2016 a failure on that rate.
So I thought we'd do the 10,000 Club again! Here's what I said last:
This year, NaNo saw four of us cross the finish line of 50,000 words in a month. Which is incredibly awesome. And I think two of the things NaNo is great for are:
1) The target. Having a target to work to seems to drive a lot people on more than just a general "I want to write a lot more."
2) The sense of being in it together. People can bounce back and forth off each other and keep going.
And I think those two things are something we can put into practice ourselves. Hence the idea of the 10,000 Club. It basically comes down to this: write 10,000 words every month. The words can go toward anything: short stories, plays, scripts, novels, whatever. Just write 10,000 words in the month.

So, Mk II is going to have a few changes to it. I'm proposing a split target for this year.
The official threshold target is only 5,000 words. 5,000 words has two things going for it: if you want to hit the target, you're not going to need to have a free month. 5,000 words can be done over a week if you're really busy. 5,000 words is, simply, manageable. However, it is still substantial. If you write 5,000 words for every month, you end up with 60,000 words at the end of 2017, which is a short novel.
There is also a second, more aspirational target of 10,000 words. This is the bigger target to try and keep people writing throughout the month.
In terms of what contributes toward the word count, I only add one thing on top of "short stories, plays, scripts, novels, whatever." And that is reviews. Reviews for AWR can also be used when counting your words for the month.
I also thought the person with the most words for each month could be declared the "winner of the month". The writer with the most monthly wins is declared the Winner of the 10,000 Club. Just for a pinch of competition.
Anyway, onto the show! Let me know if you plan on participation and keep me up to date with your counts.
