The 10,000 Club So Zovo and I briefly discussed this in the competition thread and I thought I'd make a proper thread to gauge interest. This year, NaNo saw four of us cross the finish line of 50,000 words in a month. Which is incredibly awesome. And I think two of the things NaNo is great for are: 1) The target. Having a target to work to seems to drive a lot people on more than just a general "I want to write a lot more." 2) The sense of being in it together. People can bounce back and forth off each other and keep going. And I think those two things are something we can put into practice ourselves. Hence the idea of the 10,000 Club. It basically comes down to this: write 10,000 words every month. The words can go toward anything: short stories, plays, scripts, novels, whatever. Just write 10,000 words in the month. Beyond that, I figured we could discuss here if we want to do anything else with it. Perhaps I'll keep an updated first post with everyone's updated word counts. It's let people feel like they're moving forward. And hopefully people would talk to each other and keep it going. What else? I don't know if we want to have any mini competitions (fastest) or prizes (you get to have a coloured name every month you hit 10,000?). Feel free to throw ideas at me here. Heck, discuss the target number itself. I think 10,000 is good (basically 333 words a day seem very manageable) and I wouldn't want to go any higher. But if people would prefer say 5,000 then that's something we can look at. Talk to me, team.
So, for now we're going to keep it simple. The 10,000 Club is just about writing 10,000 words a month every month. It's about an achievable target and keeping an eye on each other and offering support. Participants(Bold: month successfully completed) James: J F M A M J J A S O N D Pete: J F M A M J J A S O N D Sawyer: J F M A M J J A S O N D Adam: J F M A M J J A S O N D Inkdrinker: J F M A M J J A S O N D Jordoom: J F M A M J J A S O N D Silver: J F M A M J J A S O N D Ad: J F M A M J J A S O N D Injin: J F M A M J J A S O N D January: 7 Winners; Word Count - 89,304 February: 7 Winners; Word Count - 85,629 March: 5 Winners; Word Count - 66,429 April: 3 Winners; Word Count - 53,196 May: 2 Winners; Word Count - 29,786

Very interesting idea. 333 a day seems -so- easily done. I'll gladly give this a go. I can't imagine any reason why -anyone- couldn't keep up with that, and ideally, it'll fuel further writing and creativity by making it a habit.

Perhaps I'll keep an updated first post with everyone's updated word counts. I like that idea, and this whole thing in general. I've been in a serious writing slump since week three of NaNo so this might be just the kick in the ass I need to get back in the gear. I do think 10,000 words is a good target as well. Like Pete said, 333 words a day is a nice, easy target, but I could understand if someone wanted it lowered. Perhaps split it up and have two seperate rewards for hitting the targets? 5K get's you a 5K club title, while 10K gets you a 10K club title plus a colored name?

By the way, even if you have no suggestions, drop a post to say if you're interested. Let's see what type of numbers we're looking at.

If all five of us so far succeed with this, AWR would be writing the equivalent of a short novel every month. Which is cool.

Feels a bit weird to post here every day, so I'm gonna space updates out a bit more. Sitting at 900 now, which still isn't much, but I'm on track. This is useful, I like this. Before I felt like I only ever really wrote during competitions.

Oh yeah, don't feel obliged to post your word count every single day. Whenever you feel like it.

This is useful, I like this. Agreed. I'm even finding myself sitting down to write on a busy day just to hit 333 words. I think that's a really good thing to do.
