I wrote some semi-flash fiction last night. Its in the thread I've only used a few times and I hope everyone manages to see what weirdness I wrote while in a writing mood.

It's not brilliant and I wouldn't spend your life revising it and sending it to publishers. Overall, a decent story but not going to get short-listed for an anthology. In all honesty, I didn't go back and revised it much. I just had it sitting there, thought it was a relatively decent story and decided to send it off to a nothing too fancy publication. But the one change I did make to the story was going back and balancing the end out with another scene as per your advice, Pete. You probably don't even remember the story or the advice, but it was really useful and the story is probably partly published because of it. So, cheers, man. You're awesome.

My favorite kinds of compliments are the ones for things I don't remember doing! It's like, just by passively continuing to exist, I'm accomplishing things! Good on you, James. Glad to hear it. Congratulations.

Good. Good. Thanks. Sorry about the last comp and disappearing again. LARPs and life took over. Still writing ... mostly IC letters at the moment between games and diary notes about events.

So, a few years back, I did a bit of a case study on my protagonists. What I found was that over the course of about 20 stories, 16 men were men and 4 were women. Further, 18 were white and 2 were BME.
I think we have some pretty diverse view about representation in literature (let's call it the Jordoom-Sekot Scale), and I certainly felt like those numbers were a pretty poor reflection on my stories. Even if you ignore the issue around representation, having every story star a white guy is just plain lazy really. I wanted to try and push away from just having a default white guy as my go to character. However, I also didn't want to just randomly shoehorn in diverse characters to pat myself on the back.
Well, I just went back and considered the past two years of stories. My protagonists now stand at:
Gender: Male - 17 Female - 11
Race: White - 18 BME - 10
I think that vindicates the initial case study. Whereas women protagonist made up 20% of my protagonists earlier, the number is now up to 39%. Whereas BMEs were just 10% of my protagonists (and 100% of them were called Collingwood), they are now 36% of my protagonists (20% called Collingwood). More importantly, I think they were all realistic characters, who weren't just there for a political point.
I'm mostly just sharing this to see if it gets some discussion going. But I also recommend having a go at it yourself. It provides an interesting perspective to your writing.

But I also recommend having a go at it yourself. It provides an interesting perspective to your writing. First of all, I love that we're calling it the Jordoom-Sekot Scale. Let me just thank you for that. Because that is the perfect name. Second of all, I think I've historically been pretty damn good at this. My male-female is probably somewhere around 50-50, and for the most part, I've never really implied anything about race in my writing and the characters could just as well have been white as anything else. That said, it does make me want to write a story with a specifically black cast just to, I dunno, see how I'd do it. I mean. I feel like I have a very, very good grasp on African American culture. My graduating class was like 40% black. I've had black friends since I was born. I think I could probably do something interesting with that. Or racist. I dunno. It's a thing to think about for sure.

Why does that scene look like it was CGI'd?
