Mostly because I had actually drafted a serious moment of character development that no longer works if I change her name. If your character development relies on something as arbitrary as the character's name, then you're running the risk of having some pretty shallow character development. Characters should grow out of their emotions, personality and actions. Not due to the importance of their name.

Characters should grow out of their emotions, personality and actions. Not due to the importance of their name. It's honestly less about the name itself and more about how people using the name. I may have also exaggerated its importance a bit. Throughout the rest of the narrative people who know her just call her Rose, and anyone who slips up and calls her Roseluck is swiftly corrected by her. At first it's just meant to make her look like she herself doesn't like the name. Really, it's because her Mom was the only one who called her that, and in true superhero story fashion, she died and now Rose just doesn't want anyone else calling her that. Then Angel comes along, they fall in love. She calls her Roseluck by mistake or something and Rose doesn't even notice until Angel(or somebody else) brings it up. It's just a nice little touch that I don't want to get rid of.

So are people writing at the moment? I always wonder if people keep up the habit during the lulls in between competitions and events. A few people, such as Sawyer and Pete, I know are writing or outlining. But what about everyone else?
I'm going to start outlining my NaNo attempt soon, but at the moment I'm finishing off some short stories for competitions/stuff. One about a phantom island and an unhinged pop star, and another about a conscientious objector in New Zealand during WWI.
Are you writing? What are you writing? How is it going?

I've started blogging, sort of just to keep the joints from getting squeaky, but other than that I haven't written much of anything for a while.

There's been an alarming lack of shameless self-promotion about this.

I've started outlining for 'Draft 3.5?' of this novel concept. The few main characters and themes have remained the same but the whole setting has been revamped and the general plot taken a U-turn, becoming more Science fantasy than Sci-Fi. I'm really too fickle with this, every four months I restructure it again, leaving a quarter finished draft in its wake. Hopefully, once my teaching contract is done and I'm back in Canada, I can really start churning something up I can like for more than a few weeks.
Also want to do something different for NaNo, last year was 'Assassins crossed with Social Media', this year I'm hoping to kick off this New World Fantasy Idea, probably using a certain fairy tale as a starting off point.

Yeah, you've got to watch out for that endless drafting recycle. I've been caught in those a few times. It got to the point where I just said "fuck it" and knew that the second half was nowhere near being the same tone as the first half, but at least it got done. I think the experience is useful. I'm quietly confident that NaNo might be a bit of an AWR event this year. It sounds like we might have at least a handful giving it a go.

There's been an alarming lack of shameless self-promotion about this. :-) It's not ready to be seen. I've only got like four entries and they're basically nonsense. Still trying to find my voice, as it were. Once I get rolling a little better there will be more information coming out.

I ended up setting my goal at 60,000 words, but I'm sitting at around 70,000 right now. Another 20K will end up added to it before the end of the week while I edit out plot holes. Ah, it was fun writing the story which mixed monsters and magic into St. Louis. I wrote it as a sequel to another novel I have sitting on my desktop. I've started my love affair with Urban Fantasy. Mmmmmm...

You should try rural fantasy.

You should try rural fantasy. This is a fascinating proposal that should be seriously considered.

Alright, it's time, I've gotta get back into novel writing. The file says it was last opened in April; that's hella depressing.
But I've read a ton of good inspiration lately, and I had an awesome idea for a scene today. There's gonna be chimps, with typewriters growing out of their backs, sitting in a circle. They're gonna be groom/typing each other, Daniel's going to DROP TABLE their brains ... it's all going to be a metaphor for self-referential Gödelian strange loops ... it'll be great.

It would be fascinating to see you write in a stream-of-consciousness.
