I find it a little insulting when so many of you guys say that you slapped something together in 15 minutes. It makes it sound like you don't really care. I didn't start writing until three hours before the deadline, so I had to be quick about it. Agro wanted entries and I wanted to participate, so I, at least, care. As for the acrid bitterness, Agro, you're correct, but you mentioned acrid specifically before as an example of my showing off. Was my last story redundant with the show off parts? Because then it's not so much showing off as being redundant in general.

What is considered high fantasy? Just a bit confused, sorry.

What is considered high fantasy? Just a bit confused, sorry. High Fantasy is like, Lord of the Rings and A Song of Ice and Fire. Anything on a huge, epic scale that doesn't take part of our world and has magic and elves and dwarves.

Topic: Setting: The City - I don't just want any old story set in a city. I want a story where the city is important, where it comes to life. I almost want the city to be a character itself.
LILAM:
Spelling & Grammar - 2/2 Ease of Read - 3/3 Use of Topic - 3/5 Entertainment - 5/7 Quality - 7/8
Total – 20/25
Good, decent story, Lilam. And I don’t think there’s going to be much for me to say.
I didn’t notice any mistakes (well, not if I grudgingly consider American spelling) and it was a breeze to read. It was a nice flow, good sentence structure, a real ease to read. So excellent work there.
I took a couple of points from the Use of Topic, though. For two reasons. Firstly, like a few others, you really took the city as a focal point of the story rather than the setting. But, then again, you did that well. My only other complaint was that I saw pretty early on what you were doing here and I realised the ‘she’ was referring to the city.
The writing was excellent. I can’t really say much more than that. There were some great descriptions and just all-round excellent writing. However, the story itself didn’t quite capture me. I didn’t really have a connection to it. It was well-written but it didn’t quite draw me in.
But really, good stuff, Lilam. I’m glad to be reading some of your writing again. It’s been too long.
Hypocrite. Not complaining, but I just realized that I obviously had no idea what you were looking for as far as the topic goes. So I'm going to mimic Mena's question and ask directly... what do you mean by "High Fantasy"? Edit: Oh well, Silv and Reffy sorta' answered my question. Hmm, not a big fan of high fantasy... >_<

Also well done love dove! Our scores were separated by a measly point! Edit: Also I'm actually still at work.... don't tell my boss!!!

But more importantly, what are you doing playing on the interwebs when you should be working? Shoo shoo!

Where does one draw the line between swashbuckling and swords and dragons ... and high fantasy? Still puzzling here. When's the deadline? This might take a while!
Oops! Double post! Nite AWR! Going for a soak in the tub and possibly a story book in bed.

Sorcerous sky-pirates doing battle with dragons.

I'm going to allow you to be pretty broad on how you take the High Fantasy topic. As long as it's not set in our world, and it has some fantasy element to it, then you're near enough reaching the High Fantasy genre anyway. Of course, the people who hit the 'epic feel' that High Fantasy has as well as the above are the people who will be pushing for 5/5 in Use of Topic.

My idea for the city topic was an urban fantasy story about a minotaur who turns a city into his personal labyrinth ... and then something happens. I'm sorry I didn't get to write it now; I think it could have grown legs and gone someplace cool. I'll have to file it away and try on my own time later.
Now for High Fantasy I want to try for something original, but it's always tricky not to get bogged down in the genre's tropes. No cool ideas yet .... I think I'll have to sleep on it.
EDIT: I think my brainstorming for the city topic also gave me a new character for the UrbFan series. A half-jinn monster hunter named Alex Armagast. He was going to be the protagonist of my entry.

I'm probably going to continue Sam and Daenzil's adventures in 1500 words or less. Or would you take off points for including characters I've written before that are in an original(ish) universe, Agro?
