THE ARENA Read This:awritersrecluse.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=thearena&action=display&thread=4103Welcome writers, to the Arena, which will be this year January's competition. We're hoping for as many writers as possible to compete in this deadly format.
The Arena is a pure knock-out competition, designed to pit writers against each other until only one is left standing. Like the AWR Cup, an Arena Match consists of two writers, however after that rule, it's a whole new ball game.
An Arena Match consists of two writers (who are anonymous) battling it out for the chance to survive to the next round. Each match is given a topic, but not a single word prompt or a genre. Instead, the writers are given a beginning to a story that they must finish. These beginnings are written by anybody on AWR who wishes to do so.
Judging is distinctly different too from our usual system. Every member of AWR (except the writers themselves) can vote, although their vote is only counted if they have offered feedback. Like the entries themselves, the reviews and votes remain anonymous. The votes itself work as a simple thumbs-up and thumbs-down system. Whoever has the most votes go onto the next round, the loser dies... or goes out to become a spectator (but keep on judging!)
Right. If you have anymore questions, don't hesitate to ask. There's also all the previous matches from the last competition for people to look at so that they can get an idea (they'll be archived when the competition starts).
For examples, here are two matches for you to look at (ignore the comments after the final review post): awritersrecluse.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=thearena&action=display&thread=3347 awritersrecluse.proboards.com/index.cgi? board=thearena&action=display&thread=3349
And last year's schedule to get an idea of how much time you'll get to write: awritersrecluse.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=thearena&action=display&thread=3352
There's several things we need to do:
- Decide on a start date. We should get that sorted quickly so that everyone knows when.
- Have people sign-up as writers.
- And pick who's organising the competition. I believe Zovo and Kwan have offered (and I will be a last resort). So we three need to decide who's doing it.
Once we pick who's the organiser, you can start sending in Beginnings for each match. Do so by PMing the organiser (once he's selected). Remember that you never post anything (your entries, your reviews, your judging), it's done by PMing the organiser who posts it all himself.
Okay. Get signing-up.

I will help organize if necessary, and as the winner of last year's Arena, I will gladly take on the winner of this year's in a one on one fight to the death. . . er, story competition.

You could just go and actually write something for the King of the Recluse. Heck, I'd be quite happy to change the topic to something we both agree on. It's lonely up the top here. On the Arena: maybe see with Kwan how busy he'll be. If he has enough time he could organise it alone and you could write. If he's busy, you guys could run it as a duo (or indeed you alone).

I'd be cool with writing too, I just didn't figure anyone else was gonna volunteer to organize.

I'll put you up there with a question mark. If Kwan can organise it himself it would be great to have you writing.

Besides, I've got a title to defend. Sitting on this pile of severed heads will just seem silly if I don't have a chamionship belt to go with it.

I think I'm going to have the same approach to the Arena as Pete had to the Challenge. To write some really original and peculiar pieces. Basically, I want to make it as hard as possible for people to recognise me. Which I think is going to be quite a challenge for me.

I think these competitions are the only real way I can get better at writing, so I'll join in I guess.

I'm just hoping that, after all my talk, I don't get snuffed out in round one. You know, other than saying writers should PM their submission to the organizer, the initial post doesn't mention anything about competitors being anonymous.

I'll fix it.

Sign me up. I'm not working on anything at the moment anyway so maybe it will give me ideas.
