Looks at the awesomeness of that picture: And then realise that I have to write steampunk, one of the few genres I still can't get a style down for...

Doesn't necessarily have to be steampunk. Could just be your interpretation of the picture ... Maybe dystopian? Or something similar. Leaving it up to you. There is now a creativity category in the grading section :]

I can't remember, have the previous Challenges had image prompts for topics? I was actually thinking recently about starting up a regular concept art writing assignment. I have a pretty big folder full of awesome sci-fi and fantasy art.
Mostly sci-fi.

There is now a creativity category in the grading section :] Isn't Creativity just going to be Use of Topic? Oh, hey you have changed the grading system. It's all... different. I can't remember, have the previous Challenges had image prompts for topics? I was actually thinking recently about starting up a regular concept art writing assignment. I have a pretty big folder full of awesome sci-fi and fantasy art. Mostly sci-fi. ... how many of them comes from Io9's concept art writing prompts? And yeah, we've talked about using pictures. I think Reffy is the first one to actually do it.

... how many of them comes from Io9's concept art writing prompts? Zero, thank you very much! Mine is of a higher standard. I browse CG art forums and save only the choicest gems. Behold! Awesome: .... Goddamit, I get so depressed and jealous when I look at art that good. Not if I practiced for the rest of my life could I produce anything like that.

Changed the grading thingy a little, yes, to make it less about grammar and spelling and style and etc and more about fun and creativity. The cleaner and more sensible style can happen on the assignment. This is intended for fun. One of the other challenges this month will be something not yet seen on AWR as well ... but you'll just have to wait and see! {Edit: also, shoo Taed Your artwork is better ... but then that vehicle closes down the types of stories you might see compared to the desert thingy. Shrug. I liked the desert pic.}

Actually, if you practiced the rest of your life, I bet you could. 10,000 hours and all that.

10,000 hours and all that. I don't know, some people have innate talent and that's important. You can't teach it and... You could spend 10,000 hours and become good. Although, I could probably spend 10,000 hours on art and still have stickmen that look substandard to everyone else.

but then that vehicle closes down the types of stories you might see compared to the desert thingy. Shrug. I liked the desert pic.} That's actually exactly why I chose to share that image. It's absolutely gorgeous, but it isn't exactly bursting with storytelling potential. That way, if I do start a concept art writing challenge, I haven't wasted an image here. Your desert one is perfect. It makes me want to write right away.

No, way back when I first joined I seem to recall the final round of one of the AWR Cups was a picture prompt. The picture was a big meteor explosion over a forest.

I don't think that round was ever completed, though. That was the only AWR Cup never to finish. ... so. Since, it was never finished. I'm going to claim a technical victory.
