“Pretty scary huh?”
I didn’t respond to Chris’s comment. I was too transfixed on the sight before me. A very massive Victorian mansion, made of dull gray stone. It looked more like a cathedral or a castle than a house. Two great gothic spires on either side, with the main house area, two stories, settled between. A third taller tower was at the center of the building, with a great circular window. This sprawling structure was the old Peterson Mansion. Our city’s most famous landmark. I gulped nervously, taking a step back as I did. Talking about staying the night at an abandoned house was one thing. It was an entirely different story actually being there.
“Having second thoughts Wendy?” I turned from the mansion to my left. Maria Walcott; head cheerleader and my brother’s very popular girlfriend. I remembered when they had first started dating. I was fifth grade, they were in eighth. She had quickly become like the big sister I never had.
“Come on Maria, don’t be mean.” A third voice, and my attention shifted to the final member of our little quartet. Logan Baxter. Striker on the school soccer team. Beautfiul golden hair, well built and balanced muscles. Hot. I had such a crush on him.
“I was not being mean!” Maria shot back to Logan, sounding actually hurt. I felt her arm come around my shoulders and pull me into a little one armed hug. “I love this little adorable freshie. I was just making sure she actually wanted to go through with this.”
“Fess up beautfiul,” Chris said, coming into sight from behind Logan. As the team goalie, he was a little less built than Logan. Except in his legs. Years of training them to spring into action at any moment had left them at least slightly more muscled than the rest of his lithe body. “You just want an excuse so we can all go back to our homes and play Diablo.”
I glanced back to Maria to see her stick her tongue out in response, and back to Chris to see him shake his head and turn back to walk towards the house’s entrance.
“Seriously Wendy, we don’t have to stay.” I looked back to Maria, meeting her hazel eyes. “Just say the word and we go back to my place, and we play video games and watch movies. Let the big boys deal with big old spooky ghosts.” I contemplated Maria’s offer for a moment. The old house was quite scary. However, I swiftly pushed the thought out of my mind. Spending the night here had been my idea. So I shook my head no, putting a brave smile to try and ease Maria’s mind. Then, without another word, I followed Chris and Logan up the porch steps. I watched as Chris fiddled with the handle a bit, before eventually kicking it in. Fear lay in my breast as I stepped in. Lying somewhat dormant like a cancer waiting to spread. Taking one last deep breath, I took the plunge into the old building behind them.
My first thoughts were about how remarkably well preserved the house looked. There pieces of rotted furniture, a few holes in the walls, andsome mold throughout
