((It has been mentioned in passing that AWR can be somewhat confusing for new people, with over eight years of posts, stories and madness. AWR has recently been restructured to streamline the forum. This post provides an explanation of the forum for newcomers, or old hands who are a little lost.))
A Writer's Recluse
A Writer's Recluse came from, of all places, the World of Warcraft Roleplaying board. In July 2008, with people either leaving the game or wanting to branch out to more original writing, AWR was established. Over the next eight years, AWR has seen over 380,000 posts, countless competitions, and now count among our ranks, several semi-professionally published writers.
AWR is a writing forum. We hold competitions for forum members. We have spots reserved for posting stories, and we are always trying to get our members to offer feedback to each other. If you are a writer looking for a home, especially a writer who is still honing their craft, then AWR is the place for you.
AWR is also a tight knit community with members who often have not physically met but regard each other as close friends. Recently, much of the social side of AWR has shifted to the AWR Skype Chat. It allows the forum to remain more focused on writing, while still giving members a chance to chat away with each other. If you'd like to join the Skype chat, please give Kaez a message. His Skype name is: pacrivellaro
And now, with that overview out of the way, let me take a moment to run through the forum.
The Writers' Lounge
The Inkwell
The Inkwell is designed to be the hub of writing on AWR. It is a place to talk about ideas and the craft of writing. In the coming months, we're planning on adding a few more things to it, such as a weekly round table where a writing topic is thrown up and people debate on it, from the importance of themes, the place of speculative fiction, or thorny topics such as cultural appropriation.
The Inkwell also hosts the King of the Recluse. This is an on-going, King of the Hill style competition. You can read more about it in its sub-board, but I strongly urge people to get stuck in and duke it out.
Stories & Poetry
The Stories & Poetry board is simply a place for writers to post their work and seek feedback from other members of AWR. For those of you who are looking to publish stuff, then the Underground Workshop sub-board is designed as a private, password-protected place to seek feedback on your stories.
Projects
Some ideas take more than a simple story. The Projects board is designed for broader, more wide-ranging work. This might be worldbuilding, which can be seen in Pete's project board. Also, AWR is planning on getting a writer's room style project via Skype going, which will likely be housed there.
Competitions
AWR runs competitions throughout the year. The Arena and The AWR Cup are our more formal competitions, often taking a month or two to run, and involve multiple rounds. The Challenges are for those competitions which are often smaller and less formal, with people dropping in and out as they please. Please keep an eye out for them! And look back through past competitions to get an idea for them.
General
The Random Banter board used to be a huge part of the forum. As mentioned above, most of it has now shifted over to AWR's Skype Chat, which you are welcome to join. However, occasionally they might be something that still doesn't fit quite right for Skype to discuss.
Here you can also find the Archives, with various boards and threads that have now gone into hibernation, but could not possibly be deleted permanently.
So hopefully that should get you up to speed! Welcome to A Writer's Recluse!
