So, first things first, I decided not to go ahead with the RPG idea. I like it, I still want to do it, I've gotten some great feedback on it. But everytime I actually was able to sit down and draft for the past couple of weeks, I was so exhausted that I just couldn't muster the manpower to draft a new plot. Yes I know, I'm weakwilled, I'm an asshole, etc. I made the decision to go ahead with my fantasy project, which required minimal plot tweakings, half because when I did try to draft the RPG story I kept pining for the Fantasy, half because I figured it'd be better to do with my new work schedule, which doesn't allow a ton of writing time.
So I present to you, the newest edition of part 1 of my still as of yet unnamed fantasy series; Welcome Home.
Essentially I wanted an extraordinary setting but, at least for the first book, a relative ordinary story(you know, as ordinary as you can get in a fantasy setting). So I settled on a coming of age story of an elf orphan raised by human monks leaving the only home she's known to find her 'true home', specifically one among her people. The majority of the plot is focused on her travels with a human paladin and his apprentice through the lawless untamed land known as the Vale, as they hop from city state to city state, with the final quarter dedicated to teasing the reader with the greater plot that unfolds throughout the rest of the series.
Main Cast
Eldri Shayaa
An elf who was left at the main gate of an Order of Kelldor monastery near the border between the free Vale and the lands still dominated by the Akkad Empire. Grew up not feeling quite at home, due to being the only elf in a society of shorter lived humans. She watched friends that she played with grow up and forget about her. So when offered a chance to leave, she takes it, hoping to find more elves that she can make a real home with. Discovers a Talent for magic midway through the novel and spends much of the remainder learning.
Tristan
A paladin who was once a devout member of the Order of Kelldor, god of justice and war, but left after disagreeing with the Order's decision to do nothing to help people suffering during the Akkad Occupation. Eventually joins the Knights of the Vale, a group of mercenaries attempting to keep some kind of peace around the small villages scattered throughout the Vale. Arrives at the monastery that Eldri lives in because he still maintains close ties to the head. Agrees to take her to the East, at least as far as the Knight's main headquarters. As a result of the rituals required to receive the powers that paladins use he lives much longer than normal humans and eventually bonds with Eldri through the shared experience of friends moving on and even dying.
Hannah Salidor
An initiate of the Knights of the Vale, and Tristan's apprentice. As she has not yet taken her vows nor completed the necessary rituals required for full paladin-hood she retains her last name and doesn't have any of the special abilities that other paladins have. Tries to develop a friendship with Eldri off the bat because of her naturally upbeat and friendly nature.
Caladrion Kannis
Another member of the Knights of the Vale, and a Warlock. Formerly a strict adherent of the Order of Malak, god of magic and knowledge, left willingly and amicably after meeting Tristan. Joins the trio after a hilariously misguided duel with Tristan near some ruins. Agrees to teach Eldri Void magic after she discovers her Talent.
Mok'na'Thal
An orc who is yet another member of the Knights of the Vale, and a Scholar. Hailing from the Southern Isles he spouts bouts of his peoples unique philosophy. Being a Scholar he has an eidetic memory and absorbs knowledge like a sponge. Specifically he specializes in knowledge relating to the long dead Alkesh race. Using this knowledge he convinces Eldri to nurture her Talent into both schools of magic, rather than one like most people, with the goal of resurrecting the ancient Twilight Knights. While Caladrion teaches her Void Magic, he focuses on the more defensive and support minded Requiem Magic.
Caw
A Shadow Lord(one of thirteen individuals so called because of their usage of the Void school's Shade magic) from Akkad who seems to have ignored the fact that the Empire pulled out of the Vale years ago. Also searching for something, as he and his raiders have ventured deep into the Vale and are plundering many Alkesh ruins. Comes into conflict with the group near the final quarter.
I'll post up stuff like the magic system, race/culture breakdowns, religion, and excerpts later on. But it's around12:30 11:30 around here and I want to get some writing in before I go to bed. Until then, toodles.
