Afonstad
Well, I'm going ahead with my fantasy/weird fiction/crime/politics novel. Like I said, I'm actually feeling really great about the concept. It's just making sure it comes all together as a story. I keep forgetting I've written a novel (Phantoms), but this is going to be my first real, serious attempt at a novel in -years-. Hopefully, it'll be fun.
Some of you may have read the concept piece for the setting, since it was up for discussion at Inklings. I'm going to attach it here anyway. If you get the time, and you haven't read it, I'd love to hear your opinions.
Otherwise, I'm just carrying on outlining through the rest of this month and October. Attachments:Afonstad.doc (72 KB)

Anytime I encounter what appears to be a made up word/name/title my first instinct is to try and read it backwards to see if it spells something else. It's a pretty solid litmus test to let me know just how lame what I'm about to read is going to be.

Yer good. Sorry, that wasn't direct commentary on your work; it was just something I thought of when i read the title. Was kinda curious if anyone else does that.

I can't say I read them backwards. There are certainly made-up names which are horrible and make me just want to put the book down.

I've outlined up to Chapter 17. It's going good but I'm getting super concerned about the pacing of the novel. It feels a little pedestrian.
It's a very straight forward structure at the moment and because the book is relying as much on character as plot (literary speculative fiction?) I'm uneasy. I guess, if I can write well enough, it's not a problem. But when I wrote Phantoms, I think my go to 'get out of a rut' was to throw in a battle scene.

Kill off the protagonist!

I tend to kill off so many protagonists that not killing them off seems more surprising.
For example, for anyone who read the start of Phantoms and remotely remembers it, Colin dies only about two thirds through the novel. The last third was carried through by new POVs.
