I should have been more specific. I mean that after awhile the universe is aware / abuzz about the wanderer.

Hmm I think at this point, in order to drive discussion, I will work on a quick outline of what's been discussed so far. That way we can make some decisions and move forward with other questions.

Working Title: Cosmic Bounds
Main plot: Space exploration through undirected (or seemingly undirected) projection of consciousness into alien beings. (shorthand description: Star Trek meets Quantum Leap)
Possible Sub plot(s): 1 - Danger on space ship, 2 – Dual existence of carbon copied consciousness, 3 – human / alien interaction, 4 – ? (I feel like I’m missing one that we covered.)
Themes: 1 – Yay aliens!, 2 – Consciousness and self, 3 - ?
Tone: I think it lends itself towards drama but with a sense of humor about itself. Thoughts?
Currently defined characters: 1 – Wanderer, as yet unnamed, 2 – Girl, suggested name Ayla, 3 – Friend / Colleague, suggested name Oz.
Currently defined locations: Lab or military complex on earth, a spaceship, and then various alien worlds on a per episode basis
Current main questions / discussions (sub points are suggestions from our discussion thus far):
1. Mechanics of astral space travel. a. Carbon copy via meat suit b. Handwavium machine
2. What goes wrong and how? a. Does the handwavium machine go haywire? b. Is there a choice that is made that causes this? c. What’s happening as a result of this problem while the main character is wandering?
3. Why try to “go home?” a. Continuing problem with the colony ship b. Potential permanent loss of self through prolonged absence c. Degradation of “copy”
4. Alien interaction a. Does the alien consciousness play unhappy passenger to the wanderer / hijacker? b. Does the alien’s consciousness travel back to the wanderer’s body? c. Or is the alien wholly unaware of the encounter? d. How does this interaction affect alien/alien, human/alien, alien/human, and human/human interaction?
5. How much does main character know / when will he learn more? a. Allya suggests he is not aware of what’s happening at first – open for discussion.
6. What is the impetus for the next leap? a. If going with hijacker / passenger scenario, could be the passenger reclaiming its body. b. ?

Any thoughts on Doran as the main character's name? It means wanderer, stranger, or one who is exiled. Plus I think those close to him would shorten it to Dor, which sounds like door, which conjures images of change.

Ok so I've been giving this some thought and here's the latest iteration of the main plot line:
For now, main character = Doran, girl= Ayla, friend = Oz
Ayla is a captain on a small colony ship, the first of its kind on a ten year mission to colonize a planet theorized to be inhabitable based on the best long-range data we have available. Doran is a scientist who has developed a new method of transport by transferring one's consciousness into a waiting duplicate body. They are testing this technology on the mission in the hopes that future colonization can be accomplished by growing dupes and transferring the consciousness of colonists into their new bodies on the distant planet. During the mission Doran frequently checks in to his body from earth acting as a part time member of the crew as well as continuing his work at home. During one of these check-ins something occurs that facilitates the need to raise the shield, severing Doran's consciousness unbeknownst to him. This severed consciousness leaps from alien mind to alien mind, experiencing and affecting their lives through them. At home, Doran continues as he always has but whenever he now hooks up to his machine he gets flashes of his other consciousness and even alien consciousnesses. He remembers nothing of these but it is observed by Oz and Ayla.
As he travels he also gets flashes when earth Doran plugs in and he slowly pieces together what has happened. Meanwhile Oz is figuring it out on earth. Now he has to get home to "warn the colony ship of the dangers that await them and to tell everyone we are not alone."
