Textual gimmicks as in the italics and the red text? Admittedly, I tried that to make it clearer which are the villain's words, but I can see where you're coming from. I did try and write it as if it was part of a bigger story instead of a short on its own, which, as you pointed out, made it sound a bit choppy. Along with - if I'm reading this right - poor characterization? The villain was hollow and the detective and the Lieutanent were caricatures?

Free will means you can dress up as a giant banana and disco at the park.
