Oh, man. Allya's dropping out and Pete, Zovo and I are all apparently cringing at our work.
We could be in for an unusual Second Round line-up.

Because I dropped the ball with Reffy I had to use some crappier beginnings. Not that that can be used as an excuse to not write something, harden up people! ;D Also, hi! I left my job today (no worries I handed my notice in and did it all correctly) and I start the new one Monday. I'm shattered from the emotion over-haul! When do the stories get posted? Eleven hours exactly from now. Oh, man. Allya's dropping out and Pete, Zovo and I are all apparently cringing at our work. We could be in for an unusual Second Round line-up. Whether or not more people drop out will dictate how this ends up playing out. But yeah. This is going to be a really, really interesting arena one way or the other. Which, frankly, I find more interesting than if it had sort of played out in the way AWR's past would've suggested.

I don't know. I think AWR has sort of built-up this myth that the same people win these things all the time. Which, I guess, if you look at the final winner is kind of true. But then if you look at the competitions as a whole in:
2010 Arena - While Zovo won, Drall made it to the final and Tam went to the semi's. 2011 AWR Cup - While I won, Manny went to the final (and actually beat you and me in the earlier stages).
It's really only been last year where we had an Allya/Zovo/Me final and the very, very first competition which ended with Sekot vs Lilam have we had anything really predictable.

What about the other AWR writing competitions we've had, though? EDIT: Or were they lost in the folly? We've gotta have some of them. Still, I'm sure a degree of it isn't "who's won competitions in the past" but "who is regularly perceived as putting out the best writing".

Yeah, if you factor in the various monthly assignments you'll see a lot of the same names trending.

It's really only been last year where we had an Allya/Zovo/Me final and the very, very first competition which ended with Sekot vs Lilam have we had anything really predictable. Mm. What about the other AWR writing competitions we've had, though? The big ones with multiple rounds? I struggle to remember what was the one before the Folly (I think it had a massive level of drop-outs) but it went: 2008 - Sekot (Winner) - Final: Sekot vs Lilam 2009 - Wasn't the final (which never happened) You vs Tam? I think it was. Excluding the mass level of drop-outs (I realise now I've actually dropped out from something, I dropped out of that), that wasn't predictable. - THE FOLLY -2010 - Mel (Winner) - Final: Mel v Taed. But Reffy and Silver both made it to the semi-finals. 2010 (Arena) - Zovo (Winner) - Final: Zovo v Drall. Tam made it to the semi-final with Mel. 2011 - James (Winner) - Final: James v Manny. Reffy made it to the semi-final, along with Zovo. 2012 - James (Winner) - Final: James v Zovo v Allya. So yeah, I guess they're reoccuring names. Mel when she writes always go far, Zovo as well. I also do (although 2011 I only got through one round by being the highest scoring loser). But I think we also always get a few names we wouldn't initially expect each year. Silver, Drall, Tam (especially back a couple of years ago, no offence, guys) are people you would be surprised to see. I think, like Zovo said, it's the Monthly Assignment that gave off that sort of vibe. Taed always wins when he writes basically. If he doesn't then it's sort of a contest between Zovo and a few others.

Aw, fuck.
I forgot to self-censored my English spelling. That's another thing to add to the edit list.
... if I can bring myself to do it.

2009 - Wasn't the final (which never happened) You vs Tam? Yeah. We definitely have a handful of people who, when they write, put out stuff that's consistently highly regarded -- they just don't often write (Taed, Zovo, Manny, Mel, Allya, Lilam, Bloodeye, Sekot, myself, etc). So the tournaments don't exactly have consistent names, but I think everyone sort of thinks of them as 'not surprising'. You are, oddly, probably the most consistent in terms of making it deep into writing assignments. I think Silver, Reffy, Drall, and Tam are the three who notably surprised people in the tournaments so far. And none of them going far would be all that surprising to me anymore. I've seen all four of them write some really incredible stuff. It's Injin, Inkdrinker, Orom, and Thas that could pop out in this tournament. EDIT: Though, actually, I remember Orom and Thas writing killer stuff -way way way back-.

Considering how terrible my first short stories were on here I'm just happy I've progressed far enough to be a formidable competitor. These contests helped me learn how to write short stories. I had always focused on poetry before coming here.

You are, oddly, probably the most consistent in terms of making it deep into writing assignments. Quite honestly, I always consider myself slightly below the very top people on this forum. If there was a top bracket, so to speak, I think I'd be clinging to it by my fingernails. I just think I tend to write the -most-. I don't ever go for a long period of time without writing -something-. Which if the 10,000 Hour Rule has any truth in it, it might explain why I've been able to keep up with you lot. I rate Orom pretty damn highly. Every single thing of his I've reviewed, I've always gone, 'dude, write more'. He doesn't ever hit a bad note. He just needs to write more to start hitting those golden moments.

I had always focused on poetry before coming here. That's the thing what I love about these contests really. Radin, eons ago, got it right when he said it's not about winning but the self-improvement. And why I'm planning on trying to get back to a competition at least every month on AWR. But sssh. More on that later.
