Over the grammar-grumble of this morning. More pissed at myself and worried about my writing-quality. Think I know where the errors are: both the dinner-time references, right? Shrug.
No idea what to write for beginnings! Eep >.>
Agro: I know you are really busy but would you mind picking out one of the sentences you had trouble reading, pretty please? Just so I know! Dyslexia isn't an excuse and I won't learn if I don't know.

Over the grammar-grumble of this morning. More pissed at myself and worried about my writing-quality. As someone with grammar as one of his weakest points, let me say something to cheer you up. As long as it's not appalling; agents and publishers don't give a fuck. In fact they don't even go to the Copy Editor until towards the very end of the book assembly line. So I wouldn't worry too much about grammar (because it was only a few mistakes), because like I said, the quality was actually really strong. I'm not too busy (otherwise I wouldn't be coping with this Challenge!). So, sure I'll get around to that later today. Just need to do a few e-mails and clear up the house (house inspection tomorrow). There'll be a PM waiting for you when you wake up.

Yeah, but you basically closed the gap right up with the top people. You were only 3 points off the top. Stop being so negative! And don't now try and say that wasn't a sarcastic 'woo'.

By the way, I'm getting really pumped for this round. I have a feeling we're going to get some awesome entries. I want to start reading some great beginnings.
And also, we should try and get nine people writing in this round! Nine!

So, just to be sure, we have to write the beginning to a story and leave it either on a cliffhanger or just stop at 1500 right when its getting good?

Really, you should be stopping at the end of the beginning. So the end of that first chapter of a novel. Or that first scene in a story. Part of this round's challenge is showing as writers that you know what a good beginning consists of.
You shouldn't really just start writing a story and stopping as soon as you get 1,500.

If it doesn't get good in 1500 words you're doing it wrong. A Prelude/Prologue should be the hook that pulls the reader in. It should "get good" before the first paragraph has ended.

Although 'getting good' doesn't necessarily mean action or excitement. It can be giving the first hint to a mystery. Or a moment to show off an interesting character. Or a particularly good hook of an excellent first paragraph of writing... really the story should be 'good' the whole way through. Also I think io9 did an article on ten good starts to Short Stories, if people really need inspiration. But I think everyone on the forum is capable of this round.

Probably should have read this thread a bit more before posting, then. Ah, well. Hopefully you'll like it anyway.
