((I've always been fascinated with classical mythology, and a long time back I created a pantheon for another RP site in that same vein. I wanted to create a creation story and a pantheon the same way it would evolve from the mind of someone in the classical era. It needed to answer some basic questions about why the gods exist, how the world ended up the way it was, and what role they play in our daily lives.
I need to name this world, but I'm really, really bad at making up names, so I will call it "the world" for now and decide on a name later. Most of this will need some editing too as I get to the later parts of the mythology and possibly retcon parts that don't fit))
The Beginning
Before the planes existed there was chaos- a void that had absolutely no order or laws with which to govern it. Earth mixed with sky mixed with water mixed with fire. The world had no rhyme or reason and nothing existed but the primal elements that made the universe.
Though this was good, the universe was incomplete. Slowly the elements settled into their natural places as the laws of the world came into being. Earth sunk below air as it gained weight. Fire split, half of it shooting above the sky and half hiding beneath the earth. Water filled the area around the land. And for awhile, this was enough.
As time went on, the elements developed complexity and nuances, and the Elementals emerged. Rough and primal, the Elementals resembled the elements they emerged from. Air elementals soared through the sky on whispy wings made of vapor and wind. Earth elementals rolled ever so slowly over hills and valleys like glacial landslides. Water elementals flowed one way, then another in the currents of the seas. Fire elementals melted tunnels deep under the earth and radiated heat into the air and water.
After a time, the elemenals began to consolidate and form consciousness, until the Primal Gods emerged. These gods absorbed the primal elementals and became more than expressions of the world, but directors of it. Terra raised mountains that pierced the sky and valleys that created rivers. Aqua pulled the earth into the sea and directed the currents of the oceans. Aereo charted the flow of the air and created great storms from the vapor that rose off the sea. Incend scorched land, air, and sea with the heat of the sun, and erupted in violent fits of lava from the earth.
Each Primal God was master of his own domain, but wished to dominate the others. The world became ravaged with storms, droughts, and eruptions. The sky was littered with ash and vapor. The sea turned brown with mud and white with froth, and the sun was blocked from ever being seen. The Primal Gods live by no rules but their desires, and no purpose but to defeat the others.
The land split into two, and pushed the world back to the brink of collapsing into chaos. The Primal Gods paused at this as they realized the limits of their immortality. If the world slipped to total chaos, they would be swept with it, and the world would be no more. At this revelation, the Primal Gods departed the world for a time and entered the void to resolve a plan for their existence and rules to govern their actions.
In this time, the world healed itself and a new complexity emerged. Trees and plants began to cover the land, and kelp emerged in the sea. These structures took power from all the elements, but, unlike the elementals before them, belonged to none. Soon, animals emerged to prey on the plants, and both plants and animals diversified and covered the world in competition with one another.
When the Primal Gods returned to the world, it had taken on a new shape in their absence. The land, air, and sky were full of living things that drew strength from the elements, then perished after a time. The Gods were moved by this discovery and vowed to preserve and foster life so that their world could continue to grow and evolve. To seal this pact, they created the first moon so that the plants and creatures of the world could have light at all times. And for awhile, the world was at peace.
