The Age of Exploration
It was ages ago that the Great City of Madrid was founded. The nearby hills were found to be rich in salts and silver, copper and gold. The elders decreed that exploration would be among the top priorities, and thus, each year, teams of scouts and explorers were sent forth from the city. Each apprehensive about the places they would go. The predators they would meet.
It was not long indeed before one of these teams came across another collection of huts that might be called a town. The meager city-state of Antwerp sent emissaries out to meet the Spanish scouts. It was decided that the Spanish would do what they could to ensure the safety of the Antwerp people.
...Even if it meant attacking them.
Years passed, a generation lived and died in Madrid, and then explorers from yet another civilization arrived near the borders of the Great City. They called themselves, "Russians." The Spanish brokered a treaty with the newcomers.
And then, another contact. This one full of tension on the side of the Spanish. They called themselves "Greeks" and they scoffed at the fare of the Ancient Spanish. They mocked the Spaniards for their hovels and their growing city.
The elders scowled in their councils, and called to the younger men of Madrid to field their war councils. They were eager to show these Greeks that it was dire to insult the Spanish.
Two more civilizations were met in the intervening time. The Siamese, a gilded people, and the Egyptians. Spanish explorers feasted in Egyptian halls. But the elders were not worried about these other peoples. They were far away, across hundreds of miles of land. There was no reason to worry about these peoples.
Ambitious leaders take the helm of Madrid and the Spanish. They decide to settle new lands, to create a city closer to the sea the explorers found to the Southwest. They decree that at least one of every family shall gather together, and begin the long trek towards the sea, where they will be rewarded with untold riches.
Along the way, this group meets a people dressed in furs and simple clothing. Not at all like the civilized cloth clothing of the Spanish, or the Greeks, or even the Russians. When they recoil in fear, believing this people to be the barbarians that had troubled the explorers as they wandered the countryside, they are surprised to find that these people are not violent, but friendly and peaceful. They share drinks, and then carry on.
They settle at the designated spot near the sea. And they decide to call the city Barcelona.
