Hot Seat games are turn by turn games. Essentially a play by email game, but one supported by the game itself. yeah, I just did some research on it... seems terrible, and not at all what i want to spend mu Sunday doing. I mean, yeah, maybe we could have a running game cycling around in the background for the next sixth months; but I was actually thinking to sit down and do a real-time multiplayer game. Maybe with Skype open and such. Yeah, that'd be a better alternative. More because we could just make it a quick game if we wanted to. The only problem is that we can't run custom maps.

Doesn't seem like much of a problem.

Doesn't seem like much of a problem. I searched for a good few days to try to get an earth map with true start locations to work. No dice.

It gives you the usual choices. Continents. Small Continents. Pangea. A few others. Earth isn't among them, though, so... Yeah.

I just want to play Civ with my friends and create secret alliances and kick peoples' ass. I don't care what the map looks like.

And that, late game, on larger maps with more "players" even AI, it gets laggy.

Honestly, I've yet to encounter a custom map that wasn't either terrible or really biased in some direction.

Y'know, the one where everyone starts on the right continent. And the other one is just teeming with resources and nobody starts there.

I was thinking It'd be cool if someone did a full on "Moon" or "Mars" mod. Where you started out with just a little landing craft and a team of astronauts and had to colonize the moon/mars. Of course, instead of barbarians there'd be moon-men or martians...

Of course, instead of barbarians there'd be moon-men or martians... There was a Civ 2 scenario that explored a human colonization of Mars. The premise was that, after the initial set-up period from a variety of nations (off the top of my head - the US, Britain, Germany, Russia, Ukraine, and Japan, though there were definitely more) contact was lost with Earth, which causes a segment of the population to break away and form the final civ, calling themselves the Martians. The scenario picks up right after this happens. Also, there's a Terra map type in Civ V. Might be linked to a DLC, but I've definitely played on one. And I've done several multiplayer games with friends, and it's actually quite stable most of the time.

I didn't think Terra was a DLC. I'm pretty sure it's in the game from the start.
It's just not one of the default map types. You have to hit 'advanced' and then change the map from that screen. That's where all the maps are.
