I've already got my writing all formatted in manuscript style and I don't feel like editing it into easy-readability here, so I'm just going to upload my excerpt directly. The first chapter is going to get heavily edited if not axed entirely before I'm through, but that's what December is for, so enjoy it as is for now. It's basically a placeholder at the moment; if I keep it, I'm planning on circling back and adjusting the details of the crime scene to jive with the main plot. The second chapter is better, I think, although I was a little worried it might be too dialogue-heavy. It's incomplete at the moment. I'm going to finish the second half of the chapter and post it here as soon as I get a chance. I've also got my first big question for you guys: I establish right off the bat that Catie is having some difficulty reconciling her job and her personal life. She's settled into a less exciting/dangerous/demanding career essentially because she thinks that's what a married person is supposed to do, and this has left her unfulfilled. That's the main reason why she and Daniel have started their little monster-fighting hobby, although neither one has admitted it. The question is: how do you think I should close this character progression sequence? Should she return to her job as a cop by the end of the book, or is there another way she can reconcile? Looking good, Taed. I couldn't find much to fault with it and I read through it in a breeze, it's an entertaining start. Chapter Two was a bit heavy on the dialogue but I don't think it's actually that noticeable because the dialogue is strong.
On the issue of Catie? As a couple they could come to terms with their issues and she could go back to being a cop. She could find their monster hunting hobby is even more fulfilling than her previous cop job. She could find herself losing her thrill-seeking streak as the result of a near death experience.
I think you have quite a few options open for you.
