This is a rewritten version of my previous Back story from a previous thread(which i had removed). I've up dated several parts to coincide with real world physics, theories, and lessen the ridiculousness of some aspects of the story. I'm hoping this brings it in to a much more realistic, and understandable aspect.
This Story, which I'm calling "Trial and Error - Humanities decent and rise, and path to Self destruction", is a short back story explaining the history of how humanity has come to point that it is at now i a story that I'll be writing. There will be one more short story following this that will explain the actions with in the few months leading up to my full story.
Surprise. The dictionaries of old define it as “to strike or occur to with a sudden feeling of wonder or astonishment, as through unexpectedness”, or “to come upon or discover suddenly and unexpectedly”, but the best definition for what happened would be “to make an unexpected assault on”. Yeah, that last one seems to hit the nail right on the head.
After years spent policing the world, toppling dictators, and freeing the common man from the grips of tyranny, The United States surprised the world. After many years, trillions of dollars spent, and the lives given, they decided that it was time to finally end it all. Breaking the treaties of old, they used their nuclear arsenal against terrorist armies, out of control regimes and anyone else that opposed them. With this, the 3rd world war began. The Germans, not wanting to see the world reduced to nuclear fallout, took this opportunity to test a new technology. Bio-mechanical nano machines were born. The nano machines they developed were designed for one purpose, to render Nuclear weaponry useless. Once released into the air, they would quickly multiply and begin seeking out nuclear signatures. The machines effectively “ate” the radioactive yield of the weaponry, making the weapon's warhead inert. Thus the weapons could not produce a nuclear detonation. The machines were a huge success as they effectively shut down all nuclear arm's capabilities of every nation.
Having lost its ability for nuclear assault, The US had no choice but to turn to a young MIT graduate, a self proclaimed genius. This man, known only as the father of the modern soldier, had taken the military's cybernetics concepts, and created a full body, cybernetic combat suit. This suit, known today as the NSCA(pronounced Nesca), or Neural Synaptic Combat Armor, used a computer program system similar to the one used at the time to help doctors communicate with patients with full paralysis, it allows the user to control different features of the suit, such as activating infrared imaging, by thought alone. The suit also employed numerous hydraulic systems to augment the wearer's strength, speed, agility and endurance, as well as cameras, armor plating, and micro weapon systems, all the while remaining sleek and only increasing the height of the user by a few inches. This suit effectively turned anyone into a one man wrecking machine. Testing of the suit proved it was worth the hefty price tag, and the suits were soon rushed into production. Soon, the US had full battalions employing the suit. They had the perfect weapon needed to fuel their desire to reign above all and bring resolution to a raped world. But they were wrong.
The man that created the suits had his idea rejected a few years before the war. He had spent nearly every penny he had creating them, and their rejection left him in despair. Using what little money he retained, he managed to obtain audience with several military heads from the United Kingdom, Spain, and Germany. They applauded his creation, and struck a deal with him. Soon their own scientists were using his plans to create newer versions of his base model. This in turn created a secret joining of the 3 nations, into what would later become an unwavering force.
After the US debuted their primitive versions of the NSCA, displaying the power it held in actual combat, the Europeans unleashed theirs. The European models proved to be every bit as powerful as those the US employed. All other military powers involved soon backed down after witnessing the power of these Primitive NSCA units, and soon after, the war would enter into a stalemate. Neither side was able to actually strike a decisive blow against the other. After the 17 year stalemate, all sides entered into peace agreements, and the world itself would enter into a new age soon.
The 2 largest powers of the war, the US and the European allies, had suffered huge economic loss due to the long stalemate, while smaller countries would rise to economic greatness. Even though they were weak economically, they still however possessed the largest military powers. Canada, which had become one of the largest economies thanks to newly discovered ore deposits during the war(which they went on to supply to the US and a few smaller nations during the war), had entered into a pact with the US. They would provide economic support in exchange for military protection. The Europeans however, after the public revealing of the secret military tribunal, formed a single nation, the Europa Conclave, or EC for short. This new nation, made up of what was once England, Spain, Italy, Austria, Norway, Poland and France, and placed under the leadership of what was once Germany(Germany contained the most advanced weapons, technology and the only economic base not to suffer as a result of the long stalemate, but instead grew) became the largest super power in the world. The forming of this new nation, and cooperation created by other nations, the world was now fully underway into what is known today as the Techno Renaissance.
A large Goal of the Techno Renaissance, was the massive energy crisis effecting much of the world. The bio-mechanical nano machines the Germans had released during the war, not only rendered nuclear weaponry useless, but had also rendered nuclear power useless. These nano machines had devoured the yields of nuclear fuel rods used in power plants. With no counter measure against the nano machines, there would be no way to once again utilize nuclear power. It would be 1 more year before a small group of scientists would revive the old ideas of a brilliant physicist, using his concept of creating power plants in space to harness the sun's energy to supply the earth with a never ending supply of power.
A decade later, the US/Canadian co-op began work on a new lunar project. This project managed to establish a small outpost on the surface of the moon in a small time frame of only 8 months. This outpost would later grow to serve the purpose of mining the moon to obtain valued resources, and in turn create a more suitable lunar city. Not to be out done, the EC began work on the first manned expedition to Mars. By the time the lunar outpost had grown to 3 times its original size, a feat taking several years, the EC had launched its maned flight to Mars, which utilized the latest in gridded ion thruster technology. Several months later, the Mars expedition successfully landed, but the world instead was told it was a failure, that the ship experienced severe malfunctions and crashed into the planet. After landing, the Mars team began the first stages of its true mission.
Unknown to the rest of the world, the Mars expedition was intended not to land a team of people on the planet, but to begin the process of terraforming the planet. Using information retrieved from the old Mars rover missions decades before, and terraform technology proven in small lab projects, several missiles were launched into the Mars sky. These missiles, which detonated in the upper atmosphere, released millions of small modified microbial plant bacteria along with numerous bio-mechanical catalysts, which quickly spread and multiplied throughout the upper atmosphere. Within the course of a single week, the entire planet was shielded in a haze-like bacterium layer. This layer in turn prevented the Mars expedition team from leaving the planet. The team was never meant to leave the planet however. Their landing craft carried with it enough provisions to ensure the crew could sustain themselves for a period of 2 years. Their job was to report the progress of the Algal sheathe back to the EC to ensure that the process would succeed. Because of lab tests, it was determined that the first 2 years were the most crucial in the terraforming process. If the Algal sheathe remained by the end of 2 years, Mars would be successfully terraformed and ready for habitation in 100 years.
The mocked failure of the Mars mission contributed to the prevention of attempts by other nations to reach the planet, claiming the ship's ion engines detonation had created a type of contamination of the planet. The US/Canadian co-op found this to be to their favor. With Mars out of the picture, they would in turn gain more support from the world for the Lunar city construction project. The resources obtained during the lunar mining project, quickly helped to restore the US's economy. With their economy restored, they had no use for Canada's support any longer, but opted to keep their pact with them to show good faith. The EC, soon sent their own team to the lunar surface, seeing as how Mars would be unusable for another 100 years. Several other nations would soon follow suit. The massive influx of resources from the moon soon presented a new opportunity. Mexico, a country once deemed as being “third world” by others before the war, which had profited from much needed industry during the war, making it the 3rd richest nation in the world, had devised a program to create space colonies, of the O'neill Island 3 design, that would hold synchronous orbit around the Earth. The Techno Renaissance was bringing great prosperity to humanity.
Fast forward 100 years. The EC sent another team to Mars, who deemed the planet was now up to Earth standards and ready for population. After establishing several colonies on the planet, with a population equal to the combined populations of Italy and France. A few years later, the EC announced the true mission of their old Mars expedition, and opened the planet for population by others under EC regulations. The Moon now supported seven cities with a combined populace of 300 million. The Earth was also surrounded by numerous Space colonies holding orbit at 3 of the 5 lagrange points(Points 3,4 and 5. point 1 was reserved for colony construction. Point 2 was unused). Humanity's population had exploded to new heights and was enjoying a high level or prosperity never thought possible due to the creations resulting from the Techno Renaissance. This supposed “utopia” would soon be brought back into reality.
The recently formed Republic of Asia(RA for short), formed from the former countries of China, India, Russia, Korea, Vietnam, the Czech republic, and several smaller Slavic countries, openly revolted against the US over the spacial restrictions of Lunar cities. The US, who was recognized by the World Organization as having been the first to begin the construction and population of the moon, and thus allowed to write and control the spacial regulations. The US denied any appeals for spacial increasing, stating that further increasing the size of lunar cities could lead to harmful repercussions to the moon. The RA made statements that if they were not allowed to increase the size of their cities, that they would be forced to “act accordingly”. The US threatened military action against them if they attempted to expand beyond their given borders or acted violently against them. The RA took this as a declaration of war, and bombarded the Lunar City of Armstrong with their newly christened Battle Cruisers. This in turn led to US to retaliate, and soon the first Inner-Galactic War began.
The war encompassed most of the moon, the colonies and the Earth itself for the first 2/3 of its duration. The war displayed the awe inspiring might of the weapons possessed by each side, most of all, their most recent NSCA Models. The EC remained outside of this war, and had no plans of entering into it, but they did convey warnings that any acts of war that took place in any EC territory on Earth, the moon, colony, or on Mars itself(the EC controlled 90% of Mars at the time, and the planet's habitat was still new enough that a full out war so soon could reverse the effects of the terraforming process) would lead to their direct involvement against both sides. This warning was at first heeded by both side as no one wanted to fight a war on 2 “fronts”, and the EC was left to its own devices. But eventually the war made it's way to Mars, and thus, the most destructive, and impressive portion of the war began.
The EC first used the power of their NSCA units, which utilized a new system of control that was unheard of. Instead of using a system designed to pick up on brainwaves, each NSCA user had what was referred to as a “Synaptic Plug” surgically implanted onto their backs in groups of 3, and one in their skull. These Plugs used the artificial neuralgic fibers that were created to replace nerves destroyed by paralysis to attach directly to the subject's spinal cord and brain. This in turn created an outlet for computerized information to be received and sent by the human brain. When connected to the opposite end located with in a NSCA unit, the user was granted the ability to control the unit as if it was an extension of his own body, and not another piece of hardware. Because of this new found amount of control, it required much more training to learn to control the unit, but in turn led to a more powerful weapon. The new control system allowed the EC's battalions to wipe both the US and RA armies off the surface of Mars with the smallest amount of effect on the planet's still fragile ecosystem. These new units, which were the first to be deemed NSCAs went on to crush any opposition in their path along with the EC's Naval space armada of carriers.
The RA, was the first to surrender to the EC, admitting that there was no way for them to continue fighting off the EC's armies and Navy without driving themselves bankrupt. The US itself was barely struggling to hold back the EC's army. It wasn't until they managed to retrieve one of the EC's advance NSCA units. Upon studying the unit and body, they went on to apply the same technology to their newest waves, thinking this would in turn allow them to turn the tide of the war. They were however wrong, as this new technology came to them too late into war to make a difference. Having realized their defeat was at hand, they took their greatest soldiers (among them the man that retrieved the EC NSCA unit, an officer named Albert Risnor, the only man to see combat at every major battle of the war and survive and the creator of the military tactic known as the Risnor Maneuver) and placed them into cryostasis, often against their own will. The US then surrendered.
At the conclusion of the war, the EC once again announced that they would refrain from any involvement in any armed conflict unless that conflict be brought inside their borders or to Mars. The US and Canada put their old pact behind them, and instead merged into a single nation, along with Iceland and Cuba, Forming the United Northern Territories(or UNT). The RA went into remission due to losses resulting from the war, losing 23% of their territory on the moon and ¼ of their orbital Colonies. Mankind once again entered in an era of moderate peace. Small scuffles between smaller nations would pop up and soon die out quickly from time to time, but there hasn't been a full war for 133 years.
Recently, the UNT has been pushing for Mexico, one of the last remaining stand alone nations, to join with it, promising increased prosperity and greater protection. Mexico, which has dropped to the 7th largest economy of all human nations, and the largest of the stand alone nations, refuses the UNT's constant requests to join them knowing that it was only in an attempt to gain control of the newly discovered titanium deposits within its borders. These requests however have steadily grown more and more demanding, with the UNT placing garrisons along the border with Mexico, as an indirect threat to pressure them into merging with them. Mexico however has continued to refuse the request to merge and has begun placing its own troops along its borders and requesting help from anyone that will offer it in the event of UNT invasion.
The year is 2327, and war once again lurks one the horizon.
