I Am Space Marine
The nearly seven foot tall, armor clad man advanced slowly through the brush of a jungle world inhabited by Orks. He was a Veteran Space Marine and had been with many Crusades. He had fought Chaos, Eldar, Orks, Tau and even Imperial Guard. He was no stranger to combat and it's cruelty. He welcomed war, like an old friend.
He was prone for the moment, his squad behind him as he kept his chain-sword off and his storm-pistol at the ready. They were a scout force, having lost contact with the Imperial Guard on this world. He peeked his head up, seeing the large outpost. The coast was clear and he stood up, motioning for his squad to rise as he made his way down the hill, the sun light revealing the dirt and grime on his armor and bald head.
His rugged face looked back, not a hair on his chin, one of the many things a Space Marine had no need to worry about. His eyes traced his squad. His specific squad consisted of Eleven Marines, however, multiple other Squads were positioned around the Outpost, going to their designated positions as they advanced slowly down the hill. Their Bolters raised to their shoulders in-case it was an ambush.
He was the Platoon Leader for the Recon Force their Barge had deployed upon the Planet. It took very little time for the first Squad to go in to report in. He waved his hand, signaling that it was clear for them to enter, one of the Marines getting on communications and informing the other Squads. They moved in, moving through the outpost rapidly to find any survivors as the Squad Leaders met in the previous Command Room of the Outpost.
One of the four Squad Leaders spoke to his Commanding Officer, the one who was leading the Platoon. "First-Lieutenant, the Outpost is clear, however, we have found traces of blood in the area and inside. There isn't any explosive damage, which is strange, considering this is an Imperial Guard Outpost. It seem as though they were either unprepared, or simply surprised."
The First-Lieutenant nodded. "Thank you, Sergeant Hines, return to your squad. Sergeant Inath, your report?" Inath saluted and spoke. "Sir, I have nothing to report, Sergeant Hines covered it all. I didn't notice anything and nor did any of my marines as we entered. I do have to add, that it's a bit eerie. It's like they just vanished."
The Lieutenant nodded again. "All of you may return to your squads, unless you have something Hines didn't cover to report." None of the Sergeants spoke, shuffling out of the command room as the Lieutenant sighed, mumbling to himself. "What hit this place?" He asked the air, not expecting an answer as the lights came on in the Outpost. Obviously the Tech-Marines got the power online.
He walked out of the Command room, into the air as he looked around, checking up on the Marines as they prepared defenses at the only entrance to the Outpost. They were entrenching themselves, placing barricades and putting up Heavy Bolters nearby. More Heavy Bolters were put up in several towers that were on each corner of the outpost, since it was a square, that means four towers.
The Marines patrolled the small walls for anything that may have an opening, securing it as the Lieutenant pulled his communication's device out, speaking into it. "This is First-Lieutenant Rusein, reporting into Brother-Captain Eul, the outpost is clear. No Imperial Guard are in sight, we have found traces of human blood, but nothing else. No explosions, no bodies, nothing. It's strange."
The Brother-Captain spoke. "Understood, Rusein. We will begin moving in and start scanning the planet. Keep your defenses up until we give you the O.K. to relax. Good luck." The link was cut, the Lieutenant looked proudly to the Space Marine banner of his chapter. The Space Wolves.
He walked into the control room, a Tech-Marine speaking. "First-Lieutenant, we have found the security camera footage, we have yet to open it and we figured you'd like to see it." The Lieutenant nodded, the Marine turning it on, the screen coming up as they watched.
----
Several Imperial Guardsmen had their rifles out, obviously frightful as they began firing, small, purple and white, dog-like creations rammed into them, ripping them apart easily. It was over rapidly, some other kind of Alien coming through and getting rid of the pieces of body parts and blood, or at least, most of it.
----
The Lieutenant was frightful. He truly was. He had fought every enemy that the Imperium had seen, even Necrons, except for Tyranids. His Space Wolf blood kicking in as a wide grin spread on his face. He walked out of the control room, raising his storm pistol and firing it once, speaking loudly and clearly. "You are some of the most Veteran Space Marines the Space Wolves have to offer. You have seen every enemy I have and today, you get to see the one enemy we have yet to see together. The Tyranids! But show no fear.. We know they're here, they will not surprise us."
He paused, looking around at a couple uncovered faces. They were ready for it, some, even wanted it. But he knew, as with anything human, they did have fear, even if it was a small amount.
"Ready the flamers, the heavy bolters and your bolt rifles! Today we kill some Xeno Bugs." He stopped, lowering his pistol, signaling he was finished, walking into the command room as his Tech-Marines began to set up automated Heavy Bolters. The Command Room acted as a secondary control room, allowing him to see all that was going on. Now, all there was to do was wait and prepare.
----
It had been several hours since they had called in and found it was the Tyranids who had invaded this place and now, a Lookout had reported a Tyranid approaching, with several more behind it. They were just out of range, studying the defenses from afar. There were only small ones, all dog-sized, fast little Bugs. They were like raptors, running on two legs with two arms to fight.
The Marines readied their weapons, out of the forty around, there were five in each tower, leaving twenty of them out of the four towers. Fifteen Marines were at the entrance, four of them manning Heavy Bolters, the others having their normal bolters at their shoulders. The remaining Five were making sure nothing attacked them from behind.
The Lieutenant put himself in the middle of the entrance, turning his chainsaw on, looking out over the Tyranids as they began to pour down the hill towards the entrance, a wide grinning spreading on his face as the heavy bolters began to fire at the advancing Tyranids, causing their blood to fly, their bodies to fall and trip others. But they still came, like an endless horde.
They crossed the distance quickly and easily, the marines firing their bolters, mines suddenly exploding as they crossed them, the automated Heavy Bolters firing as well. The Tyranids were being cut down rapidly, leaping the last bit of distance as those too, were cut down. It seemed to be going in favor for the Space Marines.
Suddenly, an explosion came from behind them, one of the walls was busted in as the Tyranids advanced from behind. He turned around, nodding to the five marines as they followed him, charging forward as he slammed his chain-sword into, what they had realized were called Gaunts. The chainsaw cut clean through it's head as he kicked it off his sword, firing his storm pistol into another, the blood already beginning to coat his armor. One of his marines fell, a Tyranid ripping him apart as the Lieutenant charged forward, kicking the gaunt off as he slammed his boot into it.
He helped the fallen Marine up, the Marine beginning to fire again as they struggled to plug up the hole that was rapidly falling. He looked back to the main defenses, they were doing fine for the moment. He returned his attention to the task at hand, slashing his chain-sword at another gaunt, and firing his storm pistol into it's face, throwing it off. The Marines had plugged the hole, two of the five Marines running off and grabbing a barricade, welding it to the hole, preventing anymore Tyranids from pouring through.
He grinned wide, before his grin faltered, a massive beast of purple and white flesh, four huge claws and a scythe-like tail. It crashed through the ranks, shattering the front gate defenses of the Space Marines. They took cover, the Lieutenant took his five men to the command room, shutting the door as they began to shoot from the windows. They had lost, it was evident, but they would not lose without a fight.
Lieutenant Rusein looked to the Space Wolves flag. It was going to be overtaken if they did not defend it, and so, he opened the hatch of the Command Room, getting on-top of it as his five guard followed him. The flag on-top of the roof was defended, and for the moment, would not fall. They fired from their rooftop position, some of the gaunts attempting to get up at them, but failing. The Carnifex charged towards them, two of the four towers had been destroyed by the Carnifex and nearly all of the buildings and troops.
The Lieutenant did something daring, he leapt onto the Carnifex's face, clawing at itself and failing as he popped the cap off one grenade and threw his entire belt into the Carnifex's open mouth, five grenades in total. He activated his jet pack, landing on the command building again as the Carnifex roared in agony, exploding in a colorful explosion of blood, the remaining marines fighting with their chain-swords now, out of ammo.
Lieutenant Rusein pulled his Force Sword from his back, never having to use it until now. It was tradition for a Commander to die with his Force Sword at hand in his Chapter, after all. He continued to slice down any Gaunts that came up, turning his head to see two of his marines dead, and then another, then another and one last fell. He was the last one alive and he would fight to the end.
He stayed by the flag, using his storm pistol to pick off any gaunts he could, using his force sword to cause devastating shock waves of physic energy, sending gaunts flying. He chanted to himself. "I am the Emperor's son." He ripped his sword out of the body of a Gaunt, stomping on it and sliced a Gaunt in half. "I am a destroyer of Evil." He fired his storm pistol into the face of a Gaunt, sending it flying off the edge.
"I am a Defender of Humanity." He felt a sharp pain in his back, reaching around and slamming his fist into a gaunt, it's skull breaking apart as the wound closed rapidly. "I shall forever serve the Emperor, in life and death." He felt another sharp pain in his chest, stabbing his sword into one last Tyranid. He grunted, landing next to the body of one of his fallen comrades.
He began firing his pistol off, grabbing the grenade belt of his comrade. He spoke the final words, activating the grenades, the Tyranids surrounding him and ripping at him just as he got the words off.
"I am Space Marine."
----
Even as he fell and spoke the words, the explosion rocking the building, the flag did not fall. It stayed up, the Space Wolves' banner signaling one thing, besides the defeat of the Space Wolves at the smoking outpost.
It signaled defeat for the Tyranids, Drop-Pods flying in from the atmosphere, landing in various places on the planet, soon this planet would be cleansed, and First Lieutenant Rusein's efforts would go down in Chapter History as he valiantly fought off Tyranids.
In the end, the forty Space Marines who had gone down to that Outpost had racked up an impressive kill-count of two thousand Tyranids.
Somehow, however, First-Lieutenant Rusein's Helmet had survived, having rolled down into the command room just before the explosion, giving him a kill-count of one hundred and seventy two Tyranids slain.
"The Emperor shall protect you in death, brother. But I know that even in death, it will not stop you from smiling down at the carnage of that outpost and saying 'We could've killed more.' " - Brother Captain Eul.
