mais garde ses secrets de mes saviors;
J'suis contente d'ici rester,
I waken in the dying night
to see him bathed in dim sunlight
and question if he might exist
despite the doubt that does persist
Is it that I should submit?
my blanket begs me to commit
myself to winged, fleeting hopes--
His secrets: tethers, silken ropes.
I know not if 'tis I he'll keep
and so do I fear in the hours I sleep.
My nights are spent in mute repose;
the truth exists but to oppose
the beating heart, the softened voice,
surrender is the sweeter choice,
for when he dreams I will reside
in shadows, forming at his side.
A NOTE: French => English doesn't translate exactly without losing the message.
This is a new format I am working on called "face à face" ( lit. face to face).
this face to face poem is done in two parts: once in english, once in french. The challenge is to convey the same message both times with the same rhyming strategy. Here, I chose couplets!
The speaker is haunted by the image of her lover-- who is separated from her by a great distance ( emotional, physical, I'll let you decide!) She dreams of him every night, but constantly questions whether or not he still loves her. In the end, she decides to love him regardless of what he chooses-- and is content to devote her life to him even if they can not remain together.
The phantom can be interpreted two ways:
1) it is the man she is dreaming of.
2) It is the speaker.
