50k is a decent size I think. That's, what, 250+ pages in Word?
In related news, I might participate this year.

That's like, those little D&D books. 70k tends to be the low end for real novels (DaVinci Code is around there, I think). Most are 80 or 90, probably.

Hmm. If I'm right about the page count of a 50k, that's about the length of most young adult novels such as Percy Jackson and Pendragon.

Giving it double-spacing lines, font Courier New, size 12, yields 252 pages. I've been thinking and I might do it differently this year. I'll still do the 50k but instead make it a bunch of short stories and maybe one long story. Set it all in Qwibeth. Maybe ... its a thought that hasn't yet gone away. It'd require a little planning to get right though! Either way, I will be writing!

Yeah, you're right about the pages, but the first Percy Jackson book was 384 to 400 pages (paperback or hardcover). So 250+ pages is still really damn short for a novel. Not even young adult novels like that are 250 pages. Hell, Rise of the Horde is 350 pages long. Possibly the -only- famous novel -ever- under 50,000 words was 'Slaughterhouse Five'.

Yeah, everything I've read says that, if you're looking to get published shoot for 80k+. I'm sure this is partly, for shorter novels, to provide a little wiggle room in case your publisher/editor/who thinks some part or another should be cut or other changes need to be made.
