((This is something I've been planning for a little while, and just got done putting the final revisions on this part. Thanks to a few people, this is now in good order. As always, with my stories, the title is kinda bad. Could change soon. So, without further ado, my new story.))
Prologue
“Is it done yet?” The tone of impatience in his voice made a few of the lab coat-wearing figures in the room shake. “Your time limit is almost up, and you know what happens if anyone in any part of the plan falls behind schedule.” There was a slight grunt from the back of the room. If the boss had not ordered him to make sure no harm fell to the mechanics, Chris would have put a bullet in his head right then. However, each one of them was needed, for now. He would enjoy getting to help eliminating them when the job was completely done.
Chris studied himself in the small mirror that was in the back corner of the room. He was one of the shorter people there, standing just shorter than the average and had a slight muscular build. His light brown hair was rather short, just barely reaching the top of his ears. It was his eyes that added to the intimidating aura he had gained. They were a mix of blue and green, with a permanent, knowing gleam. Few people held eye contact with him without feeling somewhat frightened.
One of the engineers walked up to him and pulled down his respirator. “We’ll have them done by the time he wants them done, Mr. Roul.” His eyes held the nervousness that he had hid so well in his voice. Chris smirked and looked directly into those eyes, planning to exploit that nervousness. He could not harm any of them, but a little test of loyalty would not hurt anybody. At least, not that badly.
“Good,” he replied. “After all, you know the kind of temper the boss has.” He smiled a sadistic, toothy grin. “Mine’s twice as bad. He may be the boss, but I am his second in command. If they aren’t ready by the day we set for you, there won’t be enough of any of you left for him to punish.” The smile on his face was gone, now replaced with any angry frown. The way this engineer answered may seal his fate in the future.
The engineer let his nervousness show even more now, some of it creeping into the tone of his voice. “The specimens will absolutely be ready by then.” He then added, quickly, “Before, even. All we need to do is prep them for the fire resistance tests, and then the cold environments. After that, they’ll be ready.” He looked as though he were finished, before finally adding, “I think you’ll be quite proud of these. I know we are. They’ll do their job quite nicely.”
Chris nodded, done playing the man’s nervousness for now. “I should hope so. All that money we gave you will have been spent very nicely if you’re right.” The engineer nodded and ran back to his workstation, afraid of anything else Chris would have to say. “We expect this done soon, everyone! Don’t let us down!” With that, Chris walked out of the room. He had another stop to make before the day was done.
“They had better not mess this up for us,” Chris mumbled to himself as he was walking down the hall. This was a habit of his, something an outsider may have viewed as insane. “But if they do…” He rubbed his hands together with a grin on his face, imagining the ways he would get to kill them if they had done something with the specimens. Oh yes, he would enjoy that. His hand instinctively went down to the spot where his gun would have been holstered had he brought it with him.
He heard footsteps in the hallway behind him, and turned to see one of the engineers. That was strange. What did they think they were doing out of the room? Surely he knew that any of the specimens left untreated would later fail. They needed every one of those specimens to succeed in testing. Chris made a mental note to be sure to make this particular engineer’s punishment much harsher than the others did.
“What do you think you’re doing?” Chris glared at the engineer, who was just stopping in front of him. “Get back into the room and make sure this little delay doesn’t delay anything.” The engineer pulled down his mask, revealing a smirk.
“Oh, shut it Roul. I know all about you.” He glared back at his superior. “I know all about the plans. You’re going to kill all of them off.”
Chris almost laughed. “Oh, how did you ever figure that out? I suppose now you’re going to try to stop me, huh? Be the hero for everyone else in there?”
The engineer smirked again, his eyes gleaming. Chris did not like that. He had an aura of insolence or disobedience around him. “No. I’m here to tell you that there is a reason I know everything. I’m the top engineer in there, forced to work with those fools only because the boss knows I’m needed there. When the time comes, I’ll be the one helping you to eliminate them.” Chris frowned. He had been hoping to kill this one first. However, he knew better than to think poorly of the boss’s judgment.
This engineer was obviously the best out of all that had been in the room. He was not afraid of Chris in the least, a sign that not much would cause him to back down. Chris could not help but feel that he would be a larger problem in the future.
“Well then,” Chris said, almost sounding defeated, hoping to lure the engineer into a false sense of power. “It seems like we’ll be working together soon. Call me as soon as they’re done. I’m the one who’ll be transporting them to the next stage. Don’t screw this up, and don’t give anything away.”
“I haven’t given anything away so far, have I?” The engineer turned and walked back to the lab, before yelling back to Chris. “Drop the charade! You’re not nearly as disappointed as you sound.” Chris laughed. Maybe someday he would get to kill that one too. He could wait until then.
Chris turned back to continue down the hallway, placing his hands in his pockets and whistled some tune he had heard on the radio. It was going to be a good couple of weeks to come.
((Well, let me know what you think!))
