((Blurgh, okay the best way I can describe this first one is in a movie, when dialogue is transposed over other scenes, describing it. That'll happen a bit later on in this one))
Death of a Hero
Alexander glared down the tunnel, his eyes piercing the darkness to see the writhing forms of the Underlings rampaging toward he and his friends. The creatures snake-like bodies coiled and squirmed as their overly long arms dragged them forward, and their twisted legs kicked back those behind the lead ones getting to close to the front. Mouths, larger than a man's head and filled with rows of razor fangs snapped open and closed in anticipation of the dinner waiting before them.
"We can take 'em!" Broddi growled, the Dark Dwarf unslinging his heavy Bosheit war axe from his back, gripping the weapon in both hands. Waves of the dark energy it exuded echoing from it, inciting the Underlings into an even greater fervor.
Natalie stared, her own silver longsword bared, her bulwark positioned in front of her body. "I think there's too many of them for us three to handle. Especially in this enclosed space." Though the paladin voiced these fears, she'd be ready to face the mob of monsters with her two friends.
Alexander continued to stare, the War Knight's fingers clenching around the hilt of his zweihander, the cobalt hilt enflaming with unholy light at his touch, the Bosheit blade glowing a derk blood red. "No, Broddi and I would be useless in this fight, not enough room for all three of us to fight, especially since he and I use large weapons... our spells would be the only help we could lend you against the Underlings, and I'm nearly out."
Broddi's frown answered the unspoken question, he had exhausted his supply of necromantic spells as well. "If we stay here, all three of us will die..." Alexander continued.
"No." Natalie said, looking at Alexander, "I'm not going to let you stay behind alone." She hissed, her eyes flicking back to see the Underlings, the beasts drawing closer.
Alexander looked at Natalie, his eyes hard. "I'm the Grand Defiler of Rhuon. You are a paladin of Demos. You don't let me do anything, I follow what you say on my whim alone." He flicked his eyes to Broddi, giving him a curt nod.
The dwarf grimaced but nodded, flipping his axe around, using the blunt side to smack Natalie on the head. Stunning the paladin and knocking her out before she could argue anymore. The Dark Dwarf slung his axe across his back, and picked Natalie up as if hse weighed nothing. "Make sure none of them bastards get past you lad." He growled, before turning and jogging out. Leaving Alexander to face the Underlings alone.
~~
Natalie came too, giving a groan of pain at the splitting headache she had. Her eyes flickering open to the searing hot gold of the sun, another groan ripping from her lips. Wait... the sun? She sat upright, the pain dulled by shock. She looked around, seeing they were out of the cave. Or, most of them were.
She saw Broddi, standing on the hill he had stopped on, facing west. Standing and marching over she glared at the dwarf. "Where's Alexander? How could you have left him back there alone!" She growled angrily, seeing the dwarf still facing away from her.
Marching around she saw tears on the pale countenance of the dwarf, running into his dark black beard, wetting it. "I did what he wanted me to do, lass. You know as well as I that we would have all perished down there, he sacrificed himself to save us."
~~
Alexander roared his fury as his heavy zweihander smashed aside half a dozen of the Underlings, splitting their bodies in two, crushing them against the wall. Cobalt flames played across his blade as he swung it back, killing a dozen more. Though they continued on.
~~
"The world has given birth to many great heroes, all of them finding death in one way or another, and after their fall the world seems a little less bright. A little more glum."
~~
Alexander stumbled back, feeling his face tear open from one of the ungainly swipes of his foul opponents. A chilling blast ripped past his body, a pained howl tearing from him as he cut into the ranks again.
~~
"Though we all know the end of the hero, their death generally faced at the hands of a villain or monster, our hearts are still heavy, our bodies not wanting to get up after their fall."
~~
Alexander cut deeper into their ranks, leaving broken bodies and pools of blood behind him. His own blood flowing from numerous wounds, his pain giving way to the great rage. Images of the time he could have spent with Natalie flashing through his mind, of his father, Rhuon himself, glaring upon him saying how he was a waste of a mortal champion.
~~
"Their sacrifice is a necessary one, though. For behind it comes the new heroes. Those who champion the cause of the righteous, no matter what guise they fall under. Alexander was one of those heroes."
~~
The War Knight pressed his blade into the ground. Words spilling from his lips as the endless horde of Underlings drew closer. The walls of the cavern started to shake and crumble. The unthinking beasts still driving forward to sate their hunger, to great the outside sun.
~~
"Already the world is dimmer... the shadows are longer... and hope seems dead." Broddi looked to Natalie, "but from his ashes another hero will rise. One who will take up the cause that so many before have shouldered.
"Alexander was blessed, you have to remember that too, lass. Who knows, it may be he who returns to be the hero we all need." Broddi said softly. Hearing the explosion as the cavern collapsed, as air was roughly pushed out.
The dwarf sighed and closed his eyes, "We can spend the night here. We'll march to Manafar in the morning." The dwarf moved off to set up camp, gathering some twigs together. Leaving Natalie to stare at the collapsed cavern quietly. The tomb of Alexander.
The next morning, she and Broddi built a small cairne ontop of the opening, gathering rocks from the surrounding hills before venturing off to Manafar. Amaril would need to hear of Alexander's downfall, so the entire Temple of Rhuon could feel the loss of the Grand Defiler.
Natalie looked to the sun, frowning. No clouds were above, yet a shadow was cast. Then her eyes caught sight, a flock of ravens flew through the sky, their cries echoing softly below. "Alexander. Alexander."
Natalie shook her head, it was her imagination. Just that.
