I think it's a great idea!
About the beginning, I don't think it would hinder anything...but I'm not really into stories who have teenage heroes wearing jeans and a T-shirt saving a mystical world from evil dragons or sorcerers because they have the most powerful weapon of all:love. I'd really have to see where this story is going before I made any judgements on that.

Nah, I like it. Sets a nice twist. I say go for it.

...I honestly don't find it cliche...
Well, maybe a bit. But hey, usually in books like that the hero manages to wet his pants and run in the opposite direction, causing the army to finish off the bad guy while he gets all the credit.
Still, I like it. Keep with it. Try to add nice little twists, keep it un-clicheish as possible.

The only thing I'm worried about is that the story begins in Washington D.C. with a healthy dose of corporate drama. The complete opposite of the fantasy genre, imo.Only after chapter two, does he get transported to the world I made. I was just wondering if anyone thought that it would be better if I began the story in the fantasy world instead of D.C. No I think that's perfectly fine. If anything you might trick people into thinking it's Urban Fantasy instead of High Fantasy but if it's only two chapters then it's fine. Completely and utterly fine. *sage nod*

I think the key thing about character building is being logical, reliastic and precise.
The reader doesn't need to know every little spot of history about the character, indeed it's far better that they don't, but the author does. We act how we do because of our past. So if he's cold to people, perhaps a sour relationship. If he's very pessemistic, perhaps a death of someone close to him etc etc.

Yeah, in that sense writing is like acting. You know what you're doing, but the audience may not.
