I guess I'd have to see it in action before making a real judgement. My initial reaction is that I wouldn't be a huge fan of it, but it's not a big thing if the rest of the story is consistent. My real question though is: why do it? Are you trying to reveal information about your story or the events that transpired before it? I think it's often times more beneficial to reveal that information piece by piece through the story. It makes your world feel more alive and can even give your readers a bit of mystery if you choose to draw it out.

Literally just because its something I haven't tried before. It wouldn't necessarily be a backstory prologue, I would try to draw that out a bit more. More or less it would be like the opening crawl to a Star Wars movie and set the scene a little bit. A bit similar to how the new Aftermath novel does it. It probably wouldn't be much longer than the image in that link, if longer at all. |

Hey, another question in regards to the fantasy/science fiction novel.
Melee combat focus, I could still make that work right? Or would it be too much of a lazy write off by just saying 'personal shields/barriers promote more melee focused combat?'

There's Dune, there's Halo, there's Mass Effect, there's Star Wars, there's a whole host of examples of melee combat in a science fiction setting. |
