July Festival Idea: Elevator Pitches.
You literally have to pitch an idea for a story in a couple of sentences.
High Court Judge is kidnapped by the government and taken to a black site. She is then instructed to judge on various magical cases, involving faeries, vampires and witches. (Because Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell is on my mind, clearly).

I still love the idea of us telling a collective story one post at a time. Every post is limited to, say, 100 words.

Anyone got any tips for writing blind characters?
Decided to make my empathic heroine blind, but I'm drawing a blank on how to best write her. Re-watching Daredevil(both the series and, shamelessly, bits and pieces of the movie.) has given me some clues but I'm still drawing some blanks.

Write the smells, tastes, feeling, and hearing. Otherwise it's the same.

Write the smells, tastes, feeling, and hearing. Otherwise it's the same. I mostly agree with this. It's a little more nuanced in that blindness is going to affect a person's experience and worldview, but on the whole, this is very good advice to begin with.

Give them a sidekick that explains every single scene in graphically detailed dialogue before the action begins. yup.

Dialogue is one of the things coming out of the competition that I want to talk about. Because that's honestly not too far from some stories. That and fucking time shifts.

Wasn't sure if there was anything else to it, but this helps. Thanks guys. Give them a sidekick that explains every single scene in graphically detailed dialogue before the action begins. yup. Was tempted to go this route, then decided that it was dumb.

Honestly, it's not so much the individual figure involved. Those are incredibly rare figures. It's more that Tor feels comfortable enough to even sign such a contract. It's a little affirmation there's some life in the industry still.

It's a little affirmation there's some life in the industry still. ...well, sure, but also: Take that away and take about $2,000,000 away as well. I think this is mostly a sign of how much of a trend it's become to enjoy a movie or TV series and then go read the book it was based on. Not that that isn't also a generally good thing for the literary industry, just that book sales are currently being "propped up" by a more popular media.

It's the same thing that happens with light novels/manga with anime. If things went that way more in the West, it's only a positive idea.
