Fuck, Taed.
This round topic is perfect for your setting. Charon running a heist to rescue Cerberus.

Hm... gonna have to figure something out. Was hoping for a topic to tie some other strands of stories together.

The sad part is, my flash fiction last round was almost exactly slipstream with gods.
Anyway, I've got a working concept, just gotta wedge some deities in.

Nope. No ideas. Uh? How is slipstream going to work in The Mad City?

Yeah, reading up on the genre, I think it should work alright for the conclusion of the Mauwale story, but I didn't really have any plans for gods in that piece.

Unless it's like ... describing the way the people get there but that's usually public transport? I've lost my writing mojo How is it I always do horribly bad on (most) competitions?

May have an idea but it doesn't involve much "Slipstreaming" and the closest thing I have to "Gods" in my world are the pillars of the community: Tick-Tock, Waxen King, and Mother When. Considering a story for Tick-Tock that describes how he came to be and when and what he's done for the community - which may make him sort of a God. He doesn't really have worshippers though? Just his pin-head cops.

Slipstream is literally the perfect genre for The Mad City. ... eh? How? Slipstream is basically shorthand for "strange". It's about making people feel uncomfortable through juxtaposition and oddities, by placing them in somewhere which looks real but feels subtly off. It's quite similar to magical realism in a way. You have these fantastical trappings, but you play it with a straight bat, as if this is normal. And that makes it's even more strange because the unreal things are definitely not normal. To me, that's an ideal genre for the Mad City. It gives the Mad City a chance to be literary.

Hm... no ideas yet.
Gonna give it some thought but thinking I'm not going to have an easy way of fitting heist in this.

Is there anyway you want the secret ingredient used? Is it just something that has to be part of the story, or does it have to be absolutely integral to the plot or part of a twist? Just find a way to incorporate it somehow. I will probably throw out some bonus points for incorporating it creatively.

So we're looking at a possible tie in both divisions. Let's come up with a gameplan for that. Two things: A: Yeah, we might need a game plan for ties. Last year, Zovo and I had planned a flash fiction round where you had to write an advert for a fictional product. Don't know if something similar could work with a world building round? A flash fiction round where you have to sell real estate or a eulogy for a famous person in your setting? Not sure. Alternatively, we can go for a sports method of in the event of a tie, look at who won the match between the two people tied. So, for example, if Silver wins, and Zovo and I lose, then we'll be in a tie for second place. Zovo beat me when we had our match. So Zovo goes through. It might be easier and quicker that way. Of course, in the event of a three-way tie in Group A, that would not work at all. B: Can I suggest something? Feel free to shoot me down people. At the moment, we have a prolonged final round with all of the final four playing each other. I'm not sure if Pete had something planned for that because I found it a little odd at the time. Anyway, this competition has now really dragged on. It was meant to be finished by now. I thought we might like to condense the next stage of the competition into a more traditional cup format. So: Match 1: A1 vs B2 Match 2: B1 vs A2 Final: Winner of Match 1 v Winner of Match 2 And we can probably have a third and fourth play-off as well for the two knocked out writers. It just cuts a round off and gives us a chance of having this competition not dragging onto mid-March. Yeah, if Alpha gets a 3-way tie, Taed has gotta' give them some kind of flash tiebreaker round. It's the only way to go. And if you're doing that for Alpha, might as well do it for Bravo as well. So, Taed, get some tiebreaker ideas churning, because I'd say there's a very good chance at least one of these is gonna' end in a tie. But yeah, once that happens, IMO, you're exactly right James. This thing went on too long to do it the way I had it. A1 v B2 B1 v A2 Winner v Winner Two weeks, easy peasy.
