What is a good starting Civ to play? There was a sale, I thought, "Ah, what the hell." Any really, but Arabia makes for easy money which might make it an easier game for a newbie. Just choose one you like, the civ you pick merely changes your play style, they don't make it a harder or easier game.

Germany is a pretty solid first pick as well, what with the whole getting free units from killing barbarians and such.
But yeah, none of the civilizations are significantly easier or harder than any other.

Montezuma is a good choice. As is Babylon or France. Inca.

Units fighting at full strength even when injured is basically a guarantee that you won't be dominated.

As a human player you're kind of guaranteed to have less cities then the AI. I feel though that an economic bonus out ways a combative one when your starting off.

Situationally, Polynesia just stomps any other Civilization on an Archipelago map. Being able to take to the sea so much earlier than everyone else gives you all kinds of opportunites to scoop up resources and territory.

Basically just trying a few out then going to see which one I prefer.

I'm working on a Civ map of Hawaii. A Huge size map consisting of just the eight major islands. I've had to modify the distance between islands to get them all on the map, but so far it looks pretty good.

Extend the coasts out a little bit more.

Yeah, it's far from done. Concentrating on the landmasses at the moment, looking for a good map of the watershed areas for rivers.
Once that's done I'll pull up a topographic map of the surrounding ocean for the coastlines. I know the water between islands gets ridiclously deep -really- fast. I'm trying to keep it mostly accurate, but also playable.

Why get rid of the smaller islands, then? Smaller islands seem like they could add some vital stuff.
Also, utilize the 'atoll' tile.

Yeah while realistic, for gameplay purposes it might be nice to have those 4 tiny islands connected to one another with shallow sea tiles so that you can take boats or something out to them. Even if its like a chokepoint.
Altogether though it looks like a cool map.

There aren't any smaller islands in the area, I used a satellite image to draw the map from. The rest of the Hawaiian islands are even further west and are not only 1-tile small but also wouldn't fit on the map. I'll probably utilise the atoll in place of reefs, wonder if I can rename it. . . But, that defeats the whole purpose.

Fucking computer. Got the maps all done, just want to test it, can't play it because the goddamn Modbuddy requies some MS Visual program and the fucking thing (no matter how many times I install and uninstall it) doesn't launch right. Says there's some component missing.
Fucking waste of time.

Says there's some component missing. Fucking waste of time. It was an art project, really. And you made it. And it's awesome. Playing it seems kind of secondary. Making Civ maps is fun for their own sake.
